Hello, annoying problem here. I've recently installed Ubuntu Maverick beta 1 with wine 1.3.2. For some time now, my steam overlay has been functioning perfectly. Now, since installing Maverick, I've suddenly lost the steam overlay. The process doesn't even launch at all, and invoking it manually is impossible. Are there any known issues with Maverick, wine, steam and the overlay that I should be aware of? How might I go about fixing it? Thanks for any help.
I'd like to know when the problem started happening for you. I actually have GamerOverlayRenderer.dll disabled in winecfg because it was preventing me from playing half-life after the update on August 19, 2010. As for the overlay itself running as a program, I'm a little confused. The overlay is just a part of Steam, correct? Having never used the steam overlay myself, I'm curious as to what it is, actually. Since I disabled GamerOverlayRenderer.dll in winecfg (libraries tab), I've been playing all of my steam games with no problem, and when I'm not playing, the Steam icon is present in my panel and also works without any problems. I can chat with friends through steam chat and even purchase games, etc through the internal browser.

TF2, being a Source game, probably worked fine as long as you were using wine 1.3 or newer, but a recent update may have broken the functionality of the overlay. Can you revert back to your previous distro to verify that it still works there?I have the old distro installed alongside the new, and I can confirm that the overlay does work there. I have also tried downgrading to various versions of wine within Maverick, so far no luck.

For anyone tracking this thread, I got the overlay back by getting the latest mainline kernel. http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
