I'm trying to work out whether I want an ADSI phone or not, and in fact, whether it is ... useful/works with Asterisk. I have decided that for the cost/performance of the various IP based phones, I am not interested, I seem to get significantly better quality from a plain analogue phone using the TDM40B card. Is it beneficial to get an ADSI phone as opposed to a plain old analogue phone from the local K-Mart? What are the options for ADSI capable phones which will work with the TDM40B? Is there anyone in Australia who can supply an ADSI capable phone? Am I looking in the wrong direction and I just need to get a something else enabled phone? I'm mainly thinking that to replace an existing PBX where they have the various buttons for different extensions, or other slightly more advanced features.... Regards, Adam
>I'm trying to work out whether I want an ADSI phone or not, and in fact, >whether it is ... useful/works with Asterisk.Yes, this is the only way right now at a resonable price point to put a UI for the end user on the asterisk>I have decided that for the cost/performance of the various IP basedphones,>I am not interested, I seem to get significantly better quality from aplain>analogue phone using the TDM40B card.Yes, SO True even the grandstream will not allow the same functionality as athe adsi phones with the softkeys/lcd display, even though it has a great price point>Is it beneficial to get an ADSI phone as opposed to a plain old analogue >phone from the local K-Mart?YES, I like putting -Speed Dial Entries on the phone -assign the soft keys to the various functions like *69, *60 etc -dialing directories see this for other needs that just need some time applied http://www.marko.net/asterisk/archives/0301/0970.html>What are the options for ADSI capable phones which will work with the >TDM40B?Any of the aastra 350, 390, or 480's>Am I looking in the wrong direction and I just need to get a something else >enabled phone? No I have come to this same conclusion at this pt untill a good inexpensive IP phone with a LCD display comes up this is the best way to add User Freindly features to a phone so that end uers can have easy access to the asterisk features

Some stuff needs to be disabled in * to make them usable (ADSI in the voicemail system needs to be mostly disabled) but that's pretty minor stuff for even a novice code-monkey.> I have decided that for the cost/performance of the various IP based phones, > I am not interested, I seem to get significantly better quality from a plain > analogue phone using the TDM40B card.I agree.> Is it beneficial to get an ADSI phone as opposed to a plain old analogue > phone from the local K-Mart?Yes. For PBX style operation they feel more . . . PBX-like. The hard part is getting the correct phones.> What are the options for ADSI capable phones which will work with the > TDM40B?I like the Aastra PowerTouch 390 or 480 models.> Is there anyone in Australia who can supply an ADSI capable phone?Mmmmm. I can get American ones but I doubt they're certified to operate there. The big problem is getting a phone that has a code that you can get. I've gone back and forth (I actually have had six different phones) before they finally got me one that they would give me the programming code for. This is the number one problem with ADSI.> Am I looking in the wrong direction and I just need to get a something else > enabled phone? The only other messaging specs * meets are Gnophone (pretty much a computer based application) and CallerID.> I'm mainly thinking that to replace an existing PBX where they have the > various buttons for different extensions, or other slightly more advanced > features....I'd be willing to provide remote help on the software side and I can try to direct you to the correct people for the Aastra phones (I've talked to someone at Digium). Aastra in Sydney can sell you ADSI phones, contact me offlist and I'll give you a contact. Of course the usual applies with australia, is it approved ? I don't know (although I dont think so), but then the tdm series cards aren't either :-( Which leads me to 3 other topics: Is there anywhere a fairly complete ADSI programing or examples of some complex ADSI programming out there to look at ? I luv this mock up of a hotel system http://www.bdttel.com/iadsi/cmp_hotel.htm The TDM series cards: I wonder if the FXO version is just going to be a different module so mix and match for the same card ?? Australian Approvals: Could I suggest the Aussie based people on this list contact me offlist so we can discuss some options. Gary .
