I would first recommend upgrading to the latest version of R. I am
running R 2.12.2 on Windows 7 and it seem to run fine:

y=c(1,3,6), v=1:9)
> setkey(DT,x)
> DT["a"]
x y v
[1,] a 1 1
[2,] a 3 2
[3,] a 6 3
