Hello, I don''t have any experience with ZFS when the disks are in external cabinets. I have a few questions: 1. If I have a lot of spindles in an external cabinet, I''ll have several disks sharing channels (between 3 and 6 depending on chassis). I know this is generally unfavorable, but if the capacity of the 4x SAS link exceeds what I need for raw throughput, it should be OK, right? 2. We have some chassis from a vendor we are looking at again for future purchases. We had some early issues with momentary disconnects by connected drives in these chassis. We never determined if this was a chassis issue or a controller issue, but a controller update eliminated the symptoms. How does ZFS handle this sort of issue? Would a momentary disconnect due to some sort of hardware bug cause the device to disappear/reappear in the zpool? Would it trigger some sort of rebuild/resilvering? 3. With two external chassis, is it generally ''ok'' to have a drive from each chassis participate in a mirror? I think that if there is some catastrophe with one chassis and I lose all my disks at once, the array is still OK with one half of each mirror pair intact. I think there would be a performance benefit vs. having two separate zpools, one per chassis. -Will -- Will Saxon Alachua R&D Systems Administrator Sage Healthcare Division 13545 Progress BLVD Alachua, FL 32615 Tel: 386.418.7341 Fax: 813.207.9753 William.Saxon at sage.com www.sagehealth.com
