I''ve been running with zfs bootable snv_103 on my laptop for a number of weeks. When 2008.11 arrived I installed it on a spare usb ide drive. I wanted to copy rootpool/u01 from the booted snv_103 over to the 2008.11 usb drive so entered zpool import -R /test -f rpool where ''rpool'' is the pool of 2008.11 and ''rootpool'' is the pool of snv_103. then entered #zfs snapshot rootpool/u01 at 20081218:00:30 #zfs send rootpool/u01 at 20081218:00:30 > /tmp/temp.snapshot && zfs receive -F rpool/u01 < /tmp/temp.snapshot It all worked as expected and I could still boot from the 2008.11 usb drive. Next step I inserted a new sata drive in the laptop and again installed 2008.11 Also again, I wanted to copy the /u01 directory from the snv_103 drive (mounted in a usb drive caddy, now) to the 2008.11 drive; trying ''zpool import -R test rootpool '' it complained that the version of zfs was newer on snv_103 and gave up. So swapping the 2 drives around I tried: #zpool import -R /test -f rpool In /test there were all the expected files from the 2008.11 - excellent. As I said, I wanted to copy the snv_103 /u01 directory over to the 2008.11 filesystem, so: #zfs snapshot rootpool/u01 at 20081218:00:30 #zfs send rootpool/u01 at 20081218:00:30 > /tmp/temp.snapshot && zfs receive -F rpool/u01 < /tmp/temp.snapshot #zpool export rpool I swapped the 2 drives around again, so that 2008.11 was in the laptop. Booting up brings up the splash screen; it starts as though it means to boot up followed by dark screen then back to the splash screen. Starting in text mode brings up the first few lines and then back to the splash screen. Any thoughts? Do I need to do another installgrub??? Why is it not a problem for the original usb installation? Might it have been better to have updated zfs on 2008.11 and copied from the snv_103 usb drive? Thanks for your time.
looks like it missed quite a bit out - I guess it was too long; undeterred will post in chunks... It all worked as expected and I could still boot from the 2008.11 usb drive.
