Hi everyone, I will shortly install a ZFS Home Server and I am wondering which version I should install. I will use zones on my server and heavily use zone cloning, so I think it rules out S10U6. I also ruled out Indiana because of the lack of "normal" zones. So I will be using SXCE. Which version should I use ? I would like something recent for the latest drivers, but I was wondering if there are versions to avoid. Will the lastest one (b101) be stable enough ? Thanks for your help, Vincent -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks for your input. Is there somewhere a comparison of the features in the latest SXCE, Solaris10 and Indiana ? Depends on your hardware. I''ve been stable for the most part on b98. Live upgrade to b101 messed up my networking to nearly a standstill. It stuck even after I nuked the upgrade. I had to reinstall b98. fwiw, my attempt to lu from sol 10 u6 to b101 failed miserably with lots of broken services, etc. I ditched it but was able to revert to sol 10 u6. No clue. My friend also upgraded to b101. Said it was working awesome - improved network performance, etc. Then he said after a few days, he''s decided to downgrade too - too many other weird side effects. This has a comparison (at the time) as to what the differences are with the different Solaris versions: http://blogs.sun.com/weber/entry/solaris_opensolaris_nevada_indiana_sxde On Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 2:15 AM, Vincent Boisard <vboisard at gmail.com> wrote:> Do you have an idea if your problem is due to live upgrade or b101 itself ? > > Vincent > > On Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 8:06 PM, mike <mike503 at gmail.com> wrote: >> >> Depends on your hardware. I''ve loaded b101 on a box here and it''s been idling for about a week or so. But I have yet to load it up with data.> This has a comparison (at the time) as to what the differences are > with the different Solaris versions: > http://blogs.sun.com/weber/entry/solaris_opensolaris_nevada_indiana_sxdeThat''s too old to be useful. The bottom line is that SXCE is good for those who want access to the latest/greatest features and bugfixes - but each version will come with some "warts". If you know OpenSolaris well enough, you''ll recognize those warts and either live with them or work around them. Or you''ll discover that the reported issues don''t affect what you are running (in terms of workload) on the box. OTOH - if you don''t know OpenSolaris well enough, you''re better off either picking an earlier release that has proven to have very few relevant warts - usually based on a recommendation for other, more experieced, users. Or you could go with the commercial, rock solid release called Solaris U6 (Update 6) recently released. In any case, load the release you choose, play with it for a week or so, while running the type of apps you intend to run and see if it works for you. After that, consider it "production" and load up all your precious data. Also - to add yet another dimension to the decision making process - os2008.11 is due out any day now. I think that this release will be a winner. You can download and eval the Release Candidate from http://www.genunix.org/ (based on 101a). The "production" release can''t be far away..... To a large extent, os2008.nn will be a better long-term choice, since it incorporates the new package update facility. So you''ll be able to upgrade any "problem" binaries very easily and with very little of something going very wrong. Choice is Good! :) Regards, -- Al Hopper Logical Approach Inc,Plano,TX al at logical-approach.com Voice: 972.379.2133 Timezone: US CDT OpenSolaris Governing Board (OGB) Member - Apr 2005 to Mar 2007 http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/ogb/ogb_2005-2007/

I just found this: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/whats_new.jsp I lists Solaris 10 features and is a first hint at what features are in. Another question: My MoBo has a JMB (363 I think) SATA controller. I know> support is included now in sxce, but I don''t know for s10U6.I answer myself: I tries S10u6 and the Jmicron AHCI controller is not recognized. I tried the install check CD and it''s weird: it lists the controller as supported but does not recognize the disks attached to it. It also does not recognize my rge0 net interface (However I think it does not really work either in sxce) Vincent -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
