Hi all, I am trying to install Windows 2008 R2 Web edition (64-bit) in a fully-virtualized guest on Xen 3.2. The problem I am having is that the installer is hanging immediately at the graphical "Starting Windows" screen. In safe mode, the last driver loaded is disk.sys. The server hardware is a Dell PowerEdge R710, with 2 Intel Xeon E5520 processors, and 72 GiB RAM. I am using the hypervisor and Dom0 kernel packages from Debian Lenny -- xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-amd64 version 3.2.1-2 and linux-modules-2.6.26-2-xen-amd64 version 2.6.26-21 respectively. Is this a known problem with this particular version of Xen? I would prefer not to have to upgrade Xen if possible, as it is working perfectly well with other guest OSs and on other server hardware. I have attached the relevant bits of my Xen domain config below. Any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated. - Michael ---------------- name = "windows" kernel = "/usr/lib/xen-default/boot/hvmloader" builder = "hvm" device_model = "/usr/lib/xen-default/bin/qemu-dm" usbdevice = "tablet" apic = 1 acpi = 1 pae = 1 memory = 2048 maxmem = 16384 vcpus = 2 disk = [ "phy:/dev/volgroup/windows,ioemu:hda,w", "file:///root/windows.iso,ioemu:hdb:cdrom,r", ] vif = [ "type=ioemu,bridge=vps,mac=54:52:00:0f:b9:d7" ] vnc = 1 vncunused = 0 vncdisplay = 1 vnclisten = "127.0.0.1" boot = "d" _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Also, if you plan to use PV drivers, you might want to remove ioemu from your disk line disk = [ "phy:/dev/volgroup/windows:hda,w", "file:/root/windows.iso:hdb:cdrom,r", ] -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
I had that issue recently with 2008 r2, a non r2 disc however worked fine. Does it happen to be r2? Other than that dunno what to try.. I''ve just discovered a similar problem occurs with Ubuntu 9.10. Here it hangs immediately after: Initializing cgroup subsys net_cls I think this is around the point where it probes what CPUs are available and what their features are. I should point out we haven''t had any problem with Win 2k8 R2 Web on Xen 3.2 on other hardware. We''re running it in a couple of DomU''s on a Supermicro 6025B-URB with a pair of Xen E5420''s. Could there be some feature of the E5520 CPUs that is being exposed to DomU''s but that shouldn''t be? I tried Xen 3.4.2 downloaded directly from xen.org. This is even worse -- we boot images off the network to do installs, but on 3.4.2 gPXE simply hangs, then fills the screen with white. - Michael _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
