I am planning to setup a new VM server for testing purpose, performance is not 1st priority and power saving by using Atom is attractive. Anyone tried before and have any opinion to share? My host and guest are both Linux, so no need HVM. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

RE: [Xen-users] Install Xen on Intel Atom Processor
As long as you don''t need HVM or a ton of power, the Atoms are a good platform! I have a couple of them in production. I think I''d have a different perspective. When you consider the intel CPUs that are widely available, you see that, despite the end of moore''s law, the faster CPUs are about 30x as powerful as the slowest. I''d sooner pay $500 for a 2GHz core 2 duo that is 5x as powerful as an atom. Point well taken, but I have a couple of applications - even one where HVM is useful - that Atom + Xen works perfectly. We have some machines that run in our labs that we need to run Linux x86_64 plus the Transitive QuickTransit SPARC -> Intel binary emulator. On these machines we also want to be able to run a Windows VM. So, for $500 I can purchase a small Dell Optiplex 160 that has an Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM and they work perfectly...all for the price of the processor alone! -Nick>>> On 2009/07/26 at 10:39, Peter Booth <peter_booth@me.com> wrote:I think I''d have a different perspective. RE: [Xen-users] Install Xen on Intel Atom Processor
Eh, it''s all about the application. In terms of nonrecurring costs (parts) and operating costs (power, cooling(power)), it often makes far more sense to go with a low power, efficient solution. The highest performance/$ ratio is a great way of finding the sweet spot when a lot of power is needed, and cost isn''t an issue. Consider that I can fill a 42U rack with 1U atom servers, and use a single 20A circuit. Doing the same with Core2 servers, you''d be looking at closer to 3 or even 4 20A circuits. The end result would be significantly more powerful using the Core2s, but far, far, more expensive to operate - and to no gain, if CPU performance is not a concern.
