Hey everybody, I was just curious, if it''s possible to install xen on a xen guest server? Has anybody achieved this? Is it even possible? Thanks -k _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
This question has been asked before and yes, you can run Xen within Xen.>From Xen Commonly Asked Questions Guide (http://www.xen.org/files/Support/XenUsersCommonlyAskedQuestions.pdf):Nested Xen Q (D1.0): Can I run Xen within Xen? A (D1.0): Yes, You can install Xen on the base system, create a HVM domain, and install Xen in that guest domain. Note that the inner Xen system will not (yet) support HVM again. -----Original Message----- From: xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com [mailto:xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com] On Behalf Of xipher1 Sent: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 6:39 PM To: xen-users@lists.xensource.com Subject: [Xen-users] Running Xen on a Xen guest Hey everybody, I was just curious, if it''s possible to install xen on a xen guest server? Ian: I know that the Clarkson University team did this for the USENIX Xen training. It allowed for the creation of Xen guests for people at the training to leverage. I can get more info for you from Todd Deshane if you need. -----Original Message----- From: Ian Tobin [mailto:itobin@tidyhosts.com] Sent: Thursday, July 16, 2009 10:05 AM To: Stephen Spector; xipher1; xen-users@lists.xensource.com Subject: RE: [Xen-users] Running Xen on a Xen guest Curious, why would people want to do this anyway? -----Original Message----- From: xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com [mailto:xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com] On Behalf Of Stephen Spector Sent: 16 July 2009 10:03 To: ''xipher1''; xen-users@lists.xensource.com Subject: RE: [Xen-users] Running Xen on a Xen guest This question has been asked before and yes, you can run Xen within Xen.>From Xen Commonly Asked Questions Guide(http://www.xen.org/files/Support/XenUsersCommonlyAskedQuestions.pdf): Nested Xen Q (D1.0): Can I run Xen within Xen? > > Curious, why would people want to do this anyway? >Not sure what the original poster had in mind, but one of my uses of Xen is for creating an environment into which we can do restores of customers backups to ensure that in the event of a disaster, a working system can be created from the backup media. The typical platform is 2 or more Windows servers, Symantec Backup Exec Intelligent Disaster Recovery (bootable CD to bootstrap the restore) and SCSI tape drive, which works well. A few customers are using Xen now which means it''s not quite as straight forward. If we could do HVM inside HVM it would make things easier, although the performance loss would probably be unacceptable. Other than that, it would make a great framework for testing live migration etc with only one physical server. I tried this with RHEL and Debian, and both performs poorly to the point of being unusable (for me) even for training purposes. Xen PV drivers for HVM domU can make HVM I/O performance increase significantly (close to that of PV guest), but you can''t use PV drivers with -xen kernel :P -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

The HVM guest that we ran was also Ubuntu 8.04, but again I don''t think the domU should matter either. We ran on pretty nice boxes - Intel Core 2 duos, with 4 GB of RAM. We gave 1 GB or so to the guest, but you should be able to get away with less. Another potential use can be for Xen testing and development (since you don''t need a whole physical system to test Xen) Hope that helps.
