Hello, I have two physcial hosts, runnnig Xen (not sure if they are running the same version). Under these 2 hosts, I have 2 guests created, both are running Ubuntu 8.04 64bit. If I rsync the following folders from one guest to another guest for complete system migration, is it safe? bin etc home lib root sbin srv sys usr var p.s. I cannot use live migration or other tools since I don''t have control to the host. I can only control the guest. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Pro: + consistent data (ok, maybe you should shutdown dbs..) Con: - you will loose every change between snapshot-creation and transfer-finished. best option - offline: I would shutdown both guests and start the sync (may you can boot a rescue-system?) Personally, I copy / and exclude stuff like /dev /proc /sys etc that you don''t want copied. Shutdown every service you can before copying, or for less downtime I will do one copy to get the bulk of stuff across, then shutdown services, and do another copy - the second copy takes a lot less time as it''s only changed files and your (now closed) databases being copied. It''s also how I normally migrate a physical server to a VM guest. -- Simon Hobson Visit http://www.magpiesnestpublishing.co.uk/ for books by acclaimed author Gladys Hobson. (e.g. lead to performance/stability problem etc). I rather not too worry about my data, as they are mainly static contents (even MySQL is 100% read only, so I don''t care the consistency though). Thanks. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
Howard, It may simply be best to do a test migration and see how it goes. However, I would personally only copy what I knew was needed, rather than all of the binaries, libraries, kernel, etc. Best Regards, Nathan Eisenberg Sr. Systems Administrator Atlas Networks, LLC Sent from my BlackBerry -----Original Message----- From: howard chen <howachen@gmail.com> Date: Wed, 24 Jun 2009 23:27:55 To: Fabian Zimmermann<xen-users@z-technologies.de> Cc: <xen-users@lists.xensource.com> Subject: Re: [Xen-users] Migration by copying files/folder Hello all, On Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 1:34 AM, Fabian Zimmermann<xen-users@z-technologies.de> wrote:>> > > worst option - online: > It's possible, but you will not get consistent data. > > better option - lvm: > Install LVM on both guests, create a snapshot of src-guest and copy the data > to dst-guest. > Pro: + consistent data (ok, maybe you should shutdown dbs..)Well, what I concern is about the Xen modified kernel stuffs (e.g. /lib/modules/2.6.18-xen), i.e. if my two Xen hosts are running 2 different versions, will there be any problem if I overwrite the Xen stfuffs ?
