[Xen-users] RE: Xen 3.4.0, windows 2003 R2 installation crashes
I thought I was going crazy the first time this happened. I was reinstalling a production domU on a production server and I turned around and saw the server rebooting. So I tried it again, after hours, and I saw exactly what you did. I have pretty much the same exact setup, but 32 bit. I have not, but I am not sure that I have an install disk for pre-R2 Win2k3 server. I''ll try it if I can find one and report my findings. I have to admit, I haven''t installed any Win2K3 R2 servers on Xen since 3.0.3, which is what came with CentOS 5.2. I just upgraded Xen and continued to run the same domU images, without issue. I wonder if it has to do with the ''acpi''/''apic'' settings in the domU config? It''s been a couple of months, but I remember something about having to set these to ''0'' during install and then back to ''1'' after the install was done. RE: [Xen-users] RE: Xen 3.4.0, windows 2003 R2 installation crashes
OK - I figured this out, for me at least. As I stated, I was doing a reinstall, so I was having the domU boot up with the CD ISO mounted and re-installing into an existing domU configuration. Well, I forgot that I had installed the GPLPV drivers in this domU, so the domU was configured as such. I took at look at the SXP file for the domU and it contains the line ''(driver paravirtualised)'' for various devices. Maybe it''s that odd British/Canadian spelling of the word ''paravirtualised'' that does it :) So, I started with a new domU and the install has gone smoothly. Hope this helps someone else. I was completely unable to run my XP DomU after that. I am intending to file a bug report, but haven''t set up a serial console yet. Once I can do that, to see if there are any error messages to the console, I''ll file the bug. The Dom0 didn''t panic or oops - it just froze completely. Couldn''t move the cursor, and it didn''t answer pings. Mike -- Michael David Crawford mdc@prgmr.com prgmr.com - We Don''t Assume You Are Stupid. That was the latest as of about a week ago. Possibly my problem has to do with my Dom0 kernel, which is the git-tip/next Linux, again as of about a week ago, along with the release 3.4.0 Xen kernel. When I do file a bug report, I''ll attach my Linux kernel build .config to the report. The XP is an OEM SP3 CD - that is, Service Pack 3 was already applied to the Windows installer, rather than applied by me after installation. Without the GPLPV, XP works reliably but was unusably slow. I even tried moving it to a physical partition, but that didn''t affect the performance any. BeOS 5 Pro also works reliably as an HVM DomU, but is *profoundly* slow - taking more than twenty minutes to boot, and menus taking a couple minutes to open after clicking on them. Ironically, BeOS is a remarkably efficient operating system; it was always snappy and responsive when installed directly on my 150 MHz PowerPC 604 Mac. (It supports both x86 and PowerPC.) I had great hopes of hosting a whole bunch of different operating systems under Xen to aid in my development of a cross-platform audio application, but in its present state it''s just not going to work for me. At least for now, I''ve moved to VirtualBox - which has its problems too, but at least the guests aren''t so slow. But I''m happy to do whatever I can to help get Xen to the point where it *could* serve my needs. Mike -- Michael David Crawford mdc@prgmr.com prgmr.com - We Don''t Assume You Are Stupid. That was the latest as of about a week ago.The 0.10.x.x series are the latest ones. 0.9.x hasn''t been maintained for a while. Under 3.3.x I haven''t had a Dom0 lockup in quite a while. The only thing I do which is a bit out of sorts is deliberately send Dom0 (blkback) two bad requests. I do this to determine whether the ring backend is aligned to 32 or 64 bits. Everything else should be pretty much the same as the linux frontend drivers.
