[Xen-users] Debian 4.0 packaged Xen and running an unmodified Linux guest
Hi all, I have a Xen VMM based on version 3.0.3-1 running happily on Debian 4.0 "Etch". It is running several Debian domUs just fine. What I would like to do is install and run a custom Linux distro, which I have as an ISO file, as an unmodified guest. I''ve seen several HOWTOs for instructions but it seems I am missing several components such as the "device_model" file /xen/bin/qemu-dm and the kernel "/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader". I am unsure where to source these from. Has anyone done this with just the Debian Etch Xen packages? I''m happy for someone to tell me to hop onto the cluebus and read the docs but a pointer to which docs would be useful :) This chap here appears to have has done it by compiling his own Xen but I would like to stick with the repository packages if I can: http://www.math.dartmouth.edu/~sarunas/xen_304_hvm_etch.html Our Xen install info: # xm info host : xencore release : 2.6.18-4-xen-amd64 version : #1 SMP Fri May 4 02:40:51 UTC 2007 machine : x86_64 nr_cpus : 4 nr_nodes : 1 sockets_per_node : 1 cores_per_socket : 4 threads_per_core : 1 cpu_mhz : 2133 hw_caps : bfebfbff:20100800:00000000:00000140:0000e3bd:00000000:00000001 total_memory : 4095 free_memory : 256 xen_major : 3 xen_minor : 0 xen_extra : .3-1 xen_caps : xen-3.0-x86_64 hvm-3.0-x86_32 hvm-3.0-x86_32p hvm-3.0-x86_64 xen_pagesize : 4096 platform_params : virt_start=0xffff800000000000 xen_changeset : Tue Oct 17 22:09:52 2006 +0100 cc_compiler : gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21) cc_compile_by : skx cc_compile_domain : debian.org cc_compile_date : Mon Oct 22 21:30:18 UTC 2007 xend_config_format : 2 One other thing worth mentioning, the Xen dom0 kernel is "2.6.18-4-xen-amd64" and the system CPU is "model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3210 @ 2.13GHz" but does support the "vmx" flag. So a mix of AMD and Intel - is this anything to worry about? Many thanks! Not all kernels show you this flag when you boot Xen when you enable it on bios. http://valent-blog.eu Passa a Yahoo! Mail.
