[Xen-users] After memory upgrade - slow boot and "ERROR: Invalid checksum?"
Hi list,
since my memory upgrade from 2G to 6G RAM, the xen 2.6.18.8 kernel
from xen 3.3.1 does boot very slow and with call traces (see dmesg
output below).

root@dom0:~#
It takes about 10 minutes for booting, other (newer) kernels such as
2.6.24-xen from ubuntu do not have this behavior.
My Mainboard is a Intel vPro DQ35MP with QuadCore Q6600.
Can anybody help me? I do not find the reason for this problem.
A memtest86+ did not show errors and I even replaced the RAM with
another, more expensive...:-(
Thank you and best regards
Ralf

Re: [Xen-users] After memory upgrade - slow boot and "ERROR: Invalid checksum?"
No ideas? No hints, suggestions, help? TBH, this only (and many other hardware issues) happens with 2.6.18 kernel from xen. Any other (newer) kernel doesn''t have such problems. Is the 2.6.18 kernel simply to old for new hardware?? Do I really need to use a patched kernel from my distribution? Or, is there a newer kernel from xen under development, which I could try? Any other (newer) kernel doesn''t have such problems. If you know that newer kernels doesn''t have problems with your hardware, then why bother sticking with xen.org''s kernel? For example, on RHEL/Centos5, the easy method to use Xen 3.3.1 is to use xen RPMs from Gitco while still using RH''s kernel (which is actively maintained and contains lots of bugfixes and backports). And then I preferred to install all_in_one from source to not come into trouble with incompatible kernels. I do not know how the hypervisor is "in sync" with a non xen.org kernel. What I know, any linux distribution has some bad capabilities. If I could choose the OS, I would use (Open)Solaris xVM or *BSD as dom0. But xVM is not as sophesticated as xen 3.3.x, and I need at least pci passthrough which isn''t supported (yet). NetBSD actually supports xen dom0 but most documentation ends with version 2.0... All I can say is that (on Linux anyway) you can mostly mix-and-match hypervisor and kernel (both dom0 and domU) versions, provided they''re compatible enough. For example, RH''s kernel-xen is built against a modified Xen-3.1.2 sources, while Gitco''s Xen 3.3.1 RPM is (obviously) built from Xen-3.3.1 sources. This is NOT the case on Solaris dom0 though. In short, use whatever kernel that works :) Regards, Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Re: [Xen-users] After memory upgrade - slow boot and "ERROR: Invalid checksum?"
Thank you for your hints. However, compiling xen from source does not work at all on a "virgin" linux. Obviously there are a lot of missing prerequisites. Even if it has compiled well, it simply does not start any vm later. (tested with opensuse 11.x netinstall and centos 5.2 netinstall. hvm starts into qemu, pv-grub starts mini-os and hangs ). A configure script might help here and is indeed widely common for building source. At least I used your suggestion - centos 5.2 + gitco. This seems to work now with 3.3.1. Hopefully it will do in future. :-) Ralf Fajar A.
