Hello, I run all my Xen servers (5 servers in different locations in France) with a Debian Etch distro with self compiled xen hypervisor (1 servers with xen 3.1.0 ; 2 servers with xen 3.1.4 ; 2 servers with xen 3.3.0). I am running F8 myself, and I have had little trouble once I got it up and running. Watching the forum, it seems like there are more Debian users than anything. It also seems like Ubuntu has the most problems, but those are just observations. I would recommend CentOS over F8 unless newer hardware and/or features are required for your implementation. Fedora and CentOS both have their own virtualization mailing lists as well (fedora-xen and centos-virt). If you are more familiar with debian, then that probably would make more sense for you. We''re currently using Xen 3.3 for everything. >So do you mean a clean install xen 3.3 with supplied kernel? Or do you use the centos kernel? With Ubuntu I have a lot of trouble, but only kernel related. My xen-3.3 HV works but I need a more stable kernel. Furthermore, Xen dom0 kernels will not be supported with Ubuntu since 8.10. So I use now (or want to use) the xen shipped kernel. So, my main question here is, what is the better idea? Using Xen complete from xen source, so the distro doesn''t matter, or using an "out of the box" xen that is shipped by a specific distro, or something between that? About the kernel: Is there a newer kernel than 2.6.18 availlable from xen.org? [Xen-users] Install F10 PV DomU at Xen 3.3.1rc1-pre CentOS 5.2 Dom0
In both cases bellow the same installation profile has been used :- name="Fedora10PV" memory=2048 disk = [''file:/etc/xen/isos/Fedora-10-x86_64-DVD.iso,xvdc:cdrom,r'', ''phy:/dev/sda7,xvda,w''] vif = [ ''bridge=eth0'', ] vfb = [ ''type=vnc,vncunused=1'' ] bootloader = "/usr/bin/pygrub" kernel = "/isolinux/vmlinuz" ramdisk = "/isolinux/initrd.img" vcpus=1 on_reboot = ''restart'' on_crash = ''restart'' 1.) Xen 3.3.1rc1-pre ported via http://gitco.de (just hypervisor upgrade) with RH''s xenified kernel. Install prompts for source as usual. Both NFS share and local HTTP mirror works just fine. Total installation time 30-40 min. 2.) Xen 3.3.1rc1-pre ported via cloning mercurial@xensource.org . Local build succeeded with with vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-xen kernel. System rebooted into xen-3.3.1rc1-pre.gz with vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-xen and corresponding ramdisk. Same F10 install just reports "Local media detected" and goes to partitioning phase. Then request to activate eth0 at DomU in DHCP mode. Success. Without any prompts installer connects to Internet Repos and goes into package deployment phase. The last one obviously runs slow ( 100 KB/sec ADSL connection). No chance to change undesired installer behavior causing install via remote Fedora Repos F9 Install in the same Xen environment works via deployment packages from DVD ISO with no problems. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
