Hello List, I am installing xen-3.2.2 and am wondering if I still need to install the dev86src-0.16.17.tar.gz to be able to load a HVM OS like Windows. Thanks for any info, Jon _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Xen 3.2.1 port to CentOS 5.2 doesn''t require dev86 to be installed to run HVM DomUs. http://grantmcwilliams.com/index.php?view=article&catid=97%3Axen-howtos&id=204%3Arecompile-xen-321-for-centos-5&option=com_content&Itemid=379 ----- Original Message ---- From: "jonr@destar.net" <jonr@destar.net> To: xen-users@lists.xensource.com Sent: Wednesday, October 1, 2008 11:58:23 PM Subject: Re: [Xen-users] dev86 for HVM Quoting jonr@destar.net:> Hello List, > > I am installing xen-3.2.2 and am wondering if I still need to install > the dev86src-0.16.17.tar.gz to be able to load a HVM OS like Windows. > > Thanks for any info, > > JonYes it is. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

It is completely source based so everything has to be built by using the source. It does have a package management facility but I have to create the packages and add them to the repository. So in my case, I do need to install the Dev86src package to be able to have the hvm loader. So everything I do is done with the *.tar.gz files and built by hand. This is why I ask some lame questions that the distros have already taken care of behind the scenes. I have no sweet gui or virt-install or some point and click my way to xen nirvana bliss. It is all "Use The Source Luke!". =) Jon> > ----- Original Message ---- > From: "jonr@destar.net" <jonr@destar.net> > To: xen-users@lists.xensource.com > Sent: Wednesday, October 1, 2008 11:58:23 PM > Subject: Re: [Xen-users] dev86 for HVM > > Quoting jonr@destar.net: > >> Hello List, >> >> I am installing xen-3.2.2 and am wondering if I still need to install >> the dev86src-0.16.17.tar.gz to be able to load a HVM OS like Windows. >> >> Thanks for any info, >> >> Jon > > > Yes it is. > > > > _______________________________________________ > Xen-users mailing list > Xen-users@lists.xensource.com > http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users > > > >_______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I had a different experience compiling xen 3.3 on CentOS5. http://book.xen.prgmr.com/mediawiki/index.php/3.3 it compiled just fine without dev86, but it (almost silently) skipped compiling hvmloader, so I couldn''t run HVM domains until I went back, installed dev86 and recompilied tools. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
I just installed everything during initial install xen-disabled CentOS 5.2 instance from DVD. Xen 3.2.1 been compiled from source did install "hvmloader". Same results produced port:- http://grantmcwilliams.com/index.php?view=article&catid=97%3Axen-howtos&id=204%3Arecompile-xen-321-for-centos-5&option=com_content&Itemid=379 It''s for sure. However,Xen 3.2.1 port to F8 required dev86 :- http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/103746/index.html regardless everything was installed from DVD for xen-disabled F8 instance. I''ve compiled Xen 3.3 on CentOS 5.2 about month ago, previously installed only the most recent "git" version. http://bderzhavets.blogspot.com/2008/08/tuning-firewall-at-xen-3.html In this case i am not sure about "hvmloader", because switched to Xen 3.3 port via http://www.gitco.de/repo/xen3.3.0 to to CentOS 5.2 pretty soon. Anyway, thanks a lot for your link. ----- Original Message ---- From: Luke S Crawford <lsc@prgmr.com> To: Boris Derzhavets <bderzhavets@yahoo.com> Cc: jonr@destar.net; xen-users@lists.xensource.com Sent: Saturday, October 4, 2008 12:07:03 AM Subject: Re: [Xen-users] dev86 for HVM Boris Derzhavets <bderzhavets@yahoo.com> writes:> Xen 3.2.1 port to CentOS 5.2 doesn''t require dev86 to be installed > to run HVM DomUs. > http://grantmcwilliams.com/index.php?view=article&catid=97%3Axen-howtos&id=204%3Arecompile-xen-321-for-centos-5&option=com_content&Itemid=379Weird.
