[Xen-users] XEN Howto/ Host FC7 Guest Windows Me or Xp
I searched the archives but could not find a concise HOWTO for installing ME or XP as guest on FC7 as host. Note: I have XEN running on FC7 and it flashes the XEN banner at machine boots up, so the Kermnel is enabled. I tried to work from this "http://www.broermann.com/howto_amd_hvm.html" but it was pretty vague. If someone can point me to a HOWTO I would greatly appreciate it. I want to get away from Win4lin and use VMWARE, and would appreciate a comparison in a few lines if you have it handy. ALSO: Is there out of the box tcp/ip support through the host (like win4lin?) Which periferals works. serial ports? parallel ports usb? Thanks. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

These are Dual processor Dual core Xeons in IBM x345 Rack servers and dual core dual opterons SUN V20Z''s running in Raq. All my servers Both Intel and AMD support Hypervisors as Intel and AMD both made the VMX code availably to XEN for their dual core versions as I could remember. As an example/usr/sbin/xend is running and VMX is enabled in the bios. Re: [Xen-users] XEN Howto/ Host FC7 Guest Windows Me or Xp
To add, I can see what you get at, so no I dont want to use full virtualization at all, but only para-virtualization, so it might not be relevant. I found a Gui on the gnome-panel to configure virtual machines, I hate Gui and prefer to do cli so I can always have record of what I did, but let''s go that way in the mean time. I choose Paravirtualization: Then for Field "install media URL": I choose /dev /scd0 which is the correct device for my cdrom drive. Then for Field "Simple File" I am not so sure. Usually I would create an empty image with "dd" to the size I want, but here I am not sure if the Gui is going to create the image for me and only want a filename or if I have to create the image and it will just display the file size. I tried both, neither works as when I continue, I get the error message that it cannot find a file accompanied by a lot of Python garbage. Since I verified that it reads the cd from /dev/scd0, it must be with the image file. What is amiss? Re: [Xen-users] XEN Howto/ Host FC7 Guest Windows Me or Xp
Here is the error message I get and it is not due to the cdrom. Would someone tell me how they set up the initial file using "Virtual Machine Manager" Gui? I tried creating an image by hand with dd, just using a file etc. asuming the gui will dd it by itself nothing works. It is not clear what they expect on the "assign storage space" window. That is the problem with GUI configs, unlike CLI you end up fighting trivial matters easily solved with CLI configs. If anyone used Virtual Machine Manager" Gui, let me know. Re: [Xen-users] XEN Howto/ Host FC7 Guest Windows Me or Xp
I found the following Howto for FC7. "http://www.howtoforge.com/xen_gui_fedora_7_desktop" My problem is the file entered on the second window from the top displayed on the following page "http://www.howtoforge.com/xen_gui_fedora_7_desktop_p2" AGAIN I ask, Should the file be created first as a file, with dd as an image or does this do it automatically? The person who created the HOWTO selected a file /home/xen/Fedora-7 without saying HOW he created the file/image. Surely someone here must have used it and must know? admin@mmri.us wrote:> Here is the error message I get and it is not due to the cdrom. > Would someone tell me how they set up the initial file using "Virtual > Machine Manager" Gui? > I tried creating an image by hand with dd, just using a file etc. > asuming the gui will dd it by itself nothing works. > It is not clear what they expect on the "assign storage space" window. > > That is the problem with GUI configs, unlike CLI you end up fighting > trivial matters easily solved with CLI configs. > If anyone used Virtual Machine Manager" Gui, let me know. > > > > Unable to complete install ''<type ''exceptions.ValueError''> Invalid > file location given: No such file or directory > Traceback (most recent call last): > File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/create.py", line 681, in > do_install > dom = guest.start_install(False, meter = meter) > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/Guest.py", line 706, > in start_install > self._prepare_install(meter) > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/ParaVirtGuest.py", > line 45, in _prepare_install > self._installer.prepare(guest = self, meter = meter) > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/DistroManager.py", > line 678, in prepare > self._prepare_kernel_and_initrd(guest, distro, meter) > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/DistroManager.py", > line 648, in _prepare_kernel_and_initrd > distro = distro) > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/DistroManager.py", > line 578, in acquireKernel > progresscb=progresscb, distro=distro, scratchdir=scratchdir) > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/DistroManager.py", > line 561, in _storeForDistro > if store.isValidStore(fetcher, progresscb): > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/DistroManager.py", > line 213, in isValidStore > if fetcher.hasFile("Fedora", progresscb): > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/DistroManager.py", > line 160, in hasFile > tmpfile = self.acquireFile(filename, progresscb) > File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/virtinst/DistroManager.py", > line 150, in acquireFile > raise ValueError, _("Invalid file location given: ") + msg > ValueError: Invalid file location given: No such file or directory > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > Xen-users mailing list > Xen-users@lists.xensource.com > http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users > >_______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Does anyone have an answer for this, I mean it is a simple question and you all must have done it to get Xen working. During virt-install "What would you like to use as the disk (path)? /home/xen/winme.img " Do I need to create the image winme.img with dd or do I only give a filename. thanks. admin@mmri.us wrote:> Here is yet another route using CLI..at least now I get better error > messages. > > > [root@bogus ~]# xm list > Name ID Mem VCPUs State > Time(s) > Domain-0 0 16319 2 r----- > 749.7 > > [root@gateway ~]# virt-install > What is the name of your virtual machine?
