Now that I have an HVM running CentOS 4.5, I decided that I had to test out VMware Player inside it. I''d like to colaborate on a project using VMware Workstation, but would like to use Xen for everything else. Good news: vmware-config.pl runs fine modules install ... virtual machine monitor, etc, vmnet0, vmnet1, vmnet8 all [ OK ] vmplayer fires up fine Select an image config (.vmx) to start Bad news: Almost starts but gives this error... "You are running VMware Workstation via the Xen hypervisor which is known to be incompatible with VMware Workstation. You may not power on a virtual machine until this hypervisor is disabled." Interesting... It''s almost as if... there might be a way to bypass this and bleed. Set an env variable? Has anyone had better luck? By the wording I wonder if an older version of VMware Player or Workstation would try to work. What are my options for being able to do real mode with a Xen hypervisor? Qemu? Bochs? Others? I need this for two reasons, stemming from using all this more as a workstation... 1. To colaborate with people on projects that need the entire "real hardware" boot process. 2. To install Linux distros that use fancy ISOLINUX, without shuting down my machine and booting a normal kernel just to run something like VMware. Senario: Oh, I want to try out Gutsy Gibbon in an HVM... Ooops, let me first shutdown 5 Xen VMs and reboot into a "normal" kernel to do the install, then I can convert it to a Xen HVM. This is just painful. (wish I had an AMD) Is their a work around? Used qemu on a dom0 for myself, but its probably still to slow for your uses as no kqemu-module can be used to take shortcuts to run instructions directly on the cpu.> Senario: Oh, I want to try out Gutsy Gibbon in an HVM... Ooops, let > me first shutdown 5 Xen VMs and reboot into a "normal" kernel to do the > install, then I can convert it to a Xen HVM.Thats exactly the scenario i use HVM on my private AMD-box here for. Worked for every linux-distro so far, but apart from the linuxroad at bsd, dragonfly etc. its stopping fast. Running vmware-server on linux and a xen dom0 in a vmware-vm should work, same for qemu/kqemu and xen in a qemu-vm. I dislike that order and run xen on first layer. You could also give KVM a try, maybe it plays better for linux-distros on your intel-box. Maybe it is also technically possible to shift the realmode-emulation into the qemu-layer, have no technical background to say more on that. [Xen-users] Re: testing VMware inside an HVM
Hi there. I can confirm that VMWare runs if you launch it within a Win2k3-Session. The GSX-Server isn''t all that fast (well, it never really is under Windows), but its working. So if you want to give it a try, this might be a possible solution. And In VMware you selected Win2k3 as the guest operating system? I''m unable to reproduce that with VMplayer 2.0.1. 2 Questions: - Can you tell me the VMware product you are using and it''s version number? - Can you post your .vmx file? Still, I would like to know what VMware product and version number will run inside an HVM. I''ve now tried VMplayer 2.0.1 and VMware 6.0.1... on an HVM running CentOS 4.5. I set the VMware Guest Operating System to Microsoft Windows Server 2003. No go. If you have something that has worked... I''d sure like to do the same. Even if it is running Windows2003 as a VMware host... Hellas... here we go. I am running on an AMD Athlon64 X2 Xen 3.1 Hypervisor Ubuntu Dapper Drake TLS 64Bit a Windows2003 Web Edition including Service Packs HVM Guest Inside this Guest I installed an VMWare GSX-Server (VMWare Server 1.0.4) Trying to launch an Windows2003 Web Edition Guest seem to work (tested it only until the install process asks for a (valid) key that I do not have any more (since I used my key for the xen-guest-win2k3) Its slow as hell (due to 512 MB RAM for the Windows Xen-guest-for-vmware-server) but it seems working. Hope, that helped. Heh... I dont know whats possible or if its not possible for others... it worked. I wrote the specs of the system in the other thread. Basically its an AMD64-System with 64 Bit Ubuntu OS, Xen 3.1, Windows2003Web with VMWare Server 1.0.4 I dont know if trouble might occur later on but an installation inside VMWare went through (fine) till the point where it asks for a valid key that I dont have. Thank you! I am able to reproduce this now. HVM = CentOS 4.5 running VMware Server 1.0.4 (not VMware WS 6.0 image compatible) It will start a CentOS 4.5 install (inside VMware) but a ways into it, it says it didn''t detect any hard drives. So I choose a driver module it suggests. A few more seconds into it I get "Running anacoda, the CentOS-4 i386 system install - please wait..." The cursor is flashing for about 5 seconds, then stops flashing. VMware''s VM is dead at that point. Hum... bigfoot29 wrote:> Heh...
