I have a Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 motherboard with an Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (Windsor) CPU. The "svm" flag is present in /proc/cpuinfo, but "xm dmesg" contains: (XEN) AMD SVM Extension is disabled in BIOS. I have carefully gone through the BIOS setup options, and I don''t see anything relating to virtualization, HVM, SVM, AMD-V, etc. My BIOS version is not the most recent, but the changelog on Gigabyte''s site doesn''t indicate that this was fixed (and you need DOS or Windows to flash the BIOS anyway). I found a recent thread that mentioned this problem: http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-users/2007-06/msg00224.html Unlike the poster in that thread, I am unwilling to perform hacks like downgrading my BIOS version. I have emailed Gigabyte, but they have not responded. (1) Are there any further suggestions to make my board work? (2) If I have no choice but to spend more money, can anyone recommend an AM2 motherboard that doesn''t arbitrarily lock out processor features? Thank you. -- Kevin DeGraaf _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Still no joy. -- Kevin DeGraaf _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

That was with a GA-M61P-S3. It seems to be a ''feature'' of these gigabyte boards that they disable SVM and don''t let you switch it on again. The solution for that one was to downgrade to a version of the BIOS that didn''t know how to switch SVM off. That might work for you. Otherwise, avoid gigabyte boards for xen use. Gigabyte Tech Support wasn''t willing to help but I created a solution myself. There is a tool which enables you to modify your and RE-enable the Virtualization-Support (if the option is only hidden in the bios, like it was with my Bios). This is at your own risk, you can wreck the whole motherboard with it!!! If you want to give it a try and need further instructions, I''m willing to help BUT you can''t hold me responsible if anything goes wrong! Hello again, Age_M schrieb:> There is a tool which enables you to modify your and RE-enable the > Virtualization-Support (if the option is only hidden in the bios, like > it was with my Bios).I just checked the latest F4 Bios of your mainboard (M61SMES2 rev.2.0) and it has Virtualization support built-in. But the option is, as it was with my bios, disabled and hidden. I don''t know what Gigabyte does it for, but I think there is a good chance that the modification of your bios will work. But again I need to say: It _may_ work, but there''s also a risk! So, it''s your call...
