Hello, is it possibel to run DOS in a domU? I have the need for a Virtual-Machine to test recoded embedded systems but "dosemu" has not the same environement like a real virtual machine. You use plain DOS with no "emm386" or similar "big memory" features. 2. Have an AMD processor that supports real-mode in virtual machine - that way, emm386 and such should work too (emm386 uses protected mode to map memory at high addresses and then reverts back to real-mode, and that''s tricky business on Intel processors). -- Mats> > Greetings > Michelle Konzack > Systemadministrator > Tamay Dogan Network > Debian GNU/Linux Consultant > > > -- > Linux-User #280138 with the Linux Counter, http://counter.li.org/ > ##################### Debian GNU/Linux Consultant > ##################### > Michelle Konzack Apt. 917 ICQ #328449886 > 50, rue de Soultz MSN LinuxMichi > 0033/6/61925193 67100 Strasbourg/France IRC #Debian (irc.icq.com) >_______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Just for laughs, I downloaded an image-file with DOS 6.22, and it boots fine under Xen on my machine with "fda=''/images/dos622.img''" in the config file. -- Mats> -------------------- > > Itamar Reis Peixoto > > e-mail: itamar@ispbrasil.com.br > msn: itamarjp@starmedia.com > skype: itamarjp > icq: 81053601 > +55 34 3238 3845 > +55 11 4063 5033 > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Petersson, Mats" <Mats.Petersson@amd.com> > To: "Michelle Konzack" <linux4michelle@freenet.de>; "Xen Users" > <xen-users@lists.xensource.com> > Sent: Wednesday, April 04, 2007 4:07 PM > Subject: RE: [Xen-users] (MS|DR|RX|TD)-DOS in domU > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com > > [mailto:xen-users-bounces@lists.xensource.com] On Behalf Of > > Michelle Konzack > > Sent: 04 April 2007 18:53 > > To: Xen Users > > Subject: [Xen-users] (MS|DR|RX|TD)-DOS in domU > > > > Hello, > > > > is it possibel to run DOS in a domU? > > > > I have the need for a Virtual-Machine to test > > recoded embedded systems but "dosemu" has not the > > same environement like a real virtual machine. > > That should work just fine - at least as long as you either: > 1. > is it possibel to run DOS in a domU?Not without hardware support for virtualisation extensions *or* some other emulator layer (see discussion on Qemu below): I wouldn''t be at all surprised if not everything worked on Intel boxes at the moment, since the VT-x support for Realmode under Xen isn''t so good... As Mats said it may be more of a question of crazy memory tricks not working rather than standard DOS failing out right. It would be interesting to try...> I have the need for a Virtual-Machine to test > recoded embedded systems but "dosemu" has not the > same environement like a real virtual machine.Considered Qemu? Your distro may well include it and it''ll perform well enough for DOS use... You could always run it in a Xen VM if you want! Mark: To answer a question with a question: What use is a skateboard? Dave: Skateboards have wheels. Mark: My wheel has a wheel! _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
