Hello, There seems to be a fair amount of traffic regarding motherboard HVM compatibility for non-vendor systems. I for one would like a consistent source of information. So, I''ve put up a wiki page for HVM compatible motherboards. Please be gentle this is my first wiki page. http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/HVM_Compatible_Motherboards Please consider posting a success report to this thread and I will compile the information and update the wiki. Alternatively feel free to update the wiki (both style and info) directly. Please include as much information (BIOS version MB revision) as you can, and quirks required to get HVM working. DOM0 base system and DOMU guest systems would also be nice. Thanks -- Ben --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. Of course they can be removed from there as soon as someone reports a success, and maybe a brief report on what he/she did to get it to work. A little remark on the P5LD2-VM you listed as AMD-hvm-compatible. That board is a socket 775 board for Intel processors. Hello, I would like to add two HVM stories - one success and one failure. In both cases HW and Xen/Domain0 software are identical: MB: ASUS M2NPV-VM, BIOS 0504 (GeForce 6150 + nForce 430) CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ RAM: 2 x 512MB Distro: FC6 Kernel: kernel-xen-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 Xen: xen-3.0.3-0.1.rc3 ***SUCCESS*** Guest OS: Windows 2000 Professional SP1 Config: acpi=0, apic=0 Remark1: 30GB logical volume works, 40GB+ logical volume fails (BIOS reports negative size) Remark2: Windows screen resolution only up to 1024x768 ***FAILURE*** Guest OS: Windows XP Home SP2 Config: acpi=1, apic=1 Remark1: Famous blank screen after CD install, at first boot from virtual hard disk ***NOTE*** At least this is a proof that HVM works on an M2NPV-VM, in principle. (There have been others as well on this list, e.g. <006c01c710cc$cf4c85e0$9800a8c0@main>) But the blank screen problem with Windows XP guests remains to be a hard one. Strange, I''m on my 3rd machine based on the M2NPV-MX and not a single HVM issue that wasn''t of my own making (like I hadn''t installed all dependencies prior to compiling) I''ve only got one of the machines in my possession still so here goes with its vital statistics: BIOS 0303 Board revision (not too sure but here''s the part number 90-MIB0J0-G0EAYZ) cpu AMD 3200 (AM2) Dom0 Distro Ubuntu 6.06 (standard desktop install) Xen version 3.0.2-2 (from both source and binaries) DomUs OK WinXPpro / Win2K / IPCOP (2.4 kernel) DomU fail Win98se (but I didn''t exactly make a concerted effort on this) I didn''t have to do anything clever to make it work beyond doing the dependencies and running the installer. matt Andreas Fromm wrote:> Ben wrote: >> Hello, >> There seems to be a fair amount of traffic regarding motherboard >> HVM compatibility for non-vendor systems. Now I''m on 3.0.3 I don''t seem to be able to get XP to run (it crashes the domain at the "Starting Windows" part of the installer, but I haven''t spent much time on this) I have got HVMs of Ubuntu and IPCOP working though. The config files for them are just the example HVM config with the name and disc sections changed. By frequency scaling do you mean Cool and Quiet? To be honest I''ve never even thought to look since I generally run folding at home which defeats its purpose. matt _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Re: [Xen-users] HVM success reports required for wiki
After digging through the mailing list archives, I finally succeeded getting also Windows XP to work under xen 3.0.3 on an ASUS M2NPV-VM. Summary: ======= MB: ASUS M2NPV-VM, BIOS 0504 (GeForce 6150 + nForce 430) CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ RAM: 2 x 512MB Distro: FC6 Kernel: kernel-xen-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 Xen: xen-3.0.3-0.1.rc3 Guest OS: Windows XP Home SP2 EN Installation notes: ================== 1. I had to use qemu (yum install qemu) for the first-stage CD install, otherwise the cursor keys required in the next step didn''t work. 2. When Windows asked to press F6 for additional drivers, I had to press F5 and to select "Standard PC". Otherwise I consistently got the following errors: a) acpi=apic=0: VM hangs during "Starting Windows" b) acpi=apic=1: VM hangs with blank screen at first boot from HD 3. Qemu needed a long time to copy the first set of files. When qemu finally re-booted its VM, I terminated it with Ctrl-C and began booting the Xen HVM from the virtual harddisk. This way I got past both the "Starting Windows" and the "blank screen" hangs, and the remaining installation (on Xen HVM) continued smoothly. The stame story obviously happened to other people as well: http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-users/2006-06/msg00452.html https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-xen/2006-November/msg00026.html https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-xen/2006-November/msg00056.html https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-xen/2006-November/msg00158.html I also want to add that I consistently faced both hangs, regardless whether I used the FC6 xen packages, xen-3.0.3 binary tarball, or xen-3.0.3 compiled from source. Conclusions: =========== * ASUS M2NPV-VM works perfectly with HVM * Windows XP (at least SP2) hardware auto-detection gets seriously confused by Xen HVM * Cursor keys don''t work on Xen HVM after pressing F5 * Many people have suffered from the same problem, so this should go into the FAQ Best regards, Klaus On Sun, Nov 26, 2006 at 12:49:30PM +0100, Klaus Kudielka wrote:> Hello, > > I would like to add two HVM stories - one success and one failure. > > In both cases HW and Xen/Domain0 software are identical: > > MB: ASUS M2NPV-VM, BIOS 0504 (GeForce 6150 + nForce 430) > CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ > RAM: 2 x 512MB > > Distro: FC6 > Kernel: kernel-xen-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 > Xen: xen-3.0.3-0.1.rc3 > > ***SUCCESS*** > > Guest OS: Windows 2000 Professional SP1 > Config: acpi=0, apic=0 > Remark1: 30GB logical volume works, 40GB+ logical volume fails > (BIOS reports negative size) > Remark2: Windows screen resolution only up to 1024x768 > > ***FAILURE*** > > Guest OS: Windows XP Home SP2 > Config: acpi=1, apic=1 > Remark1: Famous blank screen after CD install, at first boot from > virtual hard disk > > ***NOTE*** > > At least this is a proof that HVM works on an M2NPV-VM, in principle. > (There have been others as well on this list, > e.g. <006c01c710cc$cf4c85e0$9800a8c0@main>) > > But the blank screen problem with Windows XP guests remains to be a > hard one. Re: [Xen-users] HVM success reports required for wiki
I''ve got Windows SBS 2003 R2 up and running on an Asus M2NPV-MX. I followed Klaus Kudielka''s instructions (thank-you Klaus!) and installed the OS using qemu initially then booted it with Xen after the installation completed. Here''s my h/w and s/w details: MB: Asus M2NPV-MX with BIOS version 0502 CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ RAM: 2x1GB Distro: Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Kernel: 2.6.16.29-xen Xen: 3.0.3 Guest OS: Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 And here is my xen config: import os, re arch = os.uname()[4] if re.search(''64'', arch): arch_libdir = ''lib64'' else: arch_libdir = ''lib'' kernel = "/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader" builder=''hvm'' memory = 512 shadow_memory = 8 name = "sbs2003" vif = [ ''type=ioemu, bridge=xenbr0, model=ne2k_pci'' ] disk = [ ''file:/vserver/sbs2003.img,ioemu:hda,w'', ''phy:/dev/hdb,hdc:cdrom,r'' ] device_model = ''/usr/'' + arch_libdir + ''/xen/bin/qemu-dm'' boot="c" vnc=1 _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
I''ve got Centos Server 4.4 up and running. This bodes well for Fedora/RedHat/CentOS. (The MAC of eth0 keeps on changing so there is a new hardward detect, but I think that this can be fixed according to the documentation.) Here''s my h/w and s/w details: MB: Asus N4L-VM DH with BIOS version 0802 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile (T5600) RAM: 2x.5GB Distro: Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Kernel: 2.6.16.29-xen0 Xen: 3.0.3 (built from source) Guest OS: Centos Server 4.4 And here is my xen config: import os, re arch = os.uname()[4] if re.search(''64'', arch): arch_libdir = ''lib64'' else: arch_libdir = ''lib'' kernel = "/usr/lib/xen/boot/hvmloader" builder=''hvm'' memory = 126 shadow_memory = 8 name = "centos" vcpus=1 cpus = "0-1" vif = [ ''type=ioemu, bridge=xenbr0'' ] disk = [ ''phy:/dev/sdb7,hda,w'', ''file:/var/iso/CentOS-4.4.ServerCD-i386.iso,hdc:cdrom,r''] on_poweroff = ''destroy'' on_reboot = ''restart'' on_crash = ''destroy'' device_model = ''/usr/'' + arch_libdir + ''/xen/bin/qemu-dm'' boot=''c'' ne2000=0 sdl=1 vnc=0 stdvga=0 serial=''pty'' _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
Recent failures to install from CDROM image. Debian 3.1 install using debian-31r4-i386-netinstall.iso. The boot to the ISO image works, but it was impossible to format an ext3 partition for install -- there was an error. ReiserFS ans ext2 was worked. After I got past the partitions and began the base install, debootstrap failed -- there was some incorrect parameter sent to umount some usb device or something. I could never get Debian netinstal.iso to work. I think I will bite bullet and get the DVD images (2) to see if this will work. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
