Hello, I''m trying to get working xen on dell poweredge 2850 with two Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz using gentoo amd64 distribution settings. When boot with gentoo sources 2.6.16-genoo-r13 or gentoo kernel sources 2.6.17, cat /proc/cpuinfo show me: flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm syscall nx lm constant_tsc pni monitor ds_cpl cid cx16 xtpr But with xen kernel (I''ve tried install xen according to http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xen_and_Gentoo) it didn''t show vme support. I copied .config from my gentoo sources (where vme works) to xen sources and configure xen support in kernel. But it did''t help. I cannot see any VM messages in xm dmesg and so. After it I read instructions on xen web site and I used xen tgz file from official download, but with same result. Always when I tried create WinXP host it return an error. I found on this list that error means vme is not supported by cpu. :-( But I cannot get vme working with xen kernels. Please, can anyone help me make it working properly ? Thanks a lot for support Martin Polehla _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
Have a look to this article I''ve spotted time ago.. maybe you can go back to people who wrote the article (ok, I know they used RedHat, but...) Re: [Xen-users] DELL PowerEdge 2850 - no CPU vme support
Hello, I were looking for some informations about XEN on dell site, but I didn''t found anythink usefull. But on: http://www.xensource.com/community/xen30testing/summary.php I found that dell poweredge 2850 passed tests, and also ouput from xen test cd looks good (all tests OK, kernel on xen test CD says vme support (/proc/cpuinfo) etc. I was progessing as dell howto saying, but no succes :-( Have anyone xen with virtual windowsXP guest under linux xine host running ? any suggesntions ? thanks p0l0us On Mon, 28 Aug 2006 10:13:39 +0200 Ivan Porro <pivan@dist.unige.it> wrote:> > Have a look to this article I''ve spotted time ago.. maybe you can go > back to people who > wrote the article (ok, I know they used RedHat, but...) > Hope this help > > ivan > > http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps2q06-20050322-Schmidt-OE.pdf > > > Martin Polehla wrote: > > Hello, > > I''m trying to get working xen on dell poweredge 2850 with two Intel(R) > > Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz using gentoo amd64 distribution settings. > > > > When boot with gentoo sources 2.6.16-genoo-r13 or gentoo kernel sources > > 2.6.17, cat /proc/cpuinfo show me: > > > > flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge > > mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm syscall > > nx lm constant_tsc pni monitor ds_cpl cid cx16 xtpr > > > > But with xen kernel (I''ve tried install xen according to > > http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xen_and_Gentoo) it didn''t show vme support. > > I copied .config from my gentoo sources (where vme works) to xen sources > > and configure xen support in kernel. The cpu-feature "VME" is "Virtual Mode Extension", which is nothing to do with the virtualization features recently added to Intel and AMD processors. [For those interested: It''s an extension to the VM86 mode of the processor, which is generally used for running "DOS-box" applications in Windows [and similar features in other OS''s]. The VME extensions allows "Virtual Interrupts" if enabled in CR4]. "VMX" is what you need to look for, and if you don''t have that, you''ll need to either enable it in the BIOS (assuming the BIOS does have a way to enable it) or replace enough hardware to be able to get it working - I''m no expert at DELL boxes, so I can''t really speak for exactly what you need to do, but if you want to run Windows as a virtual machine, you need to get a VMX feature bit in /proc/cpuinfo -- Mats> > I was progessing as dell howto saying, but no succes :-( > > Have anyone xen with virtual windowsXP guest under linux xine > host running ? > > any suggesntions ? > > thanks > p0l0us > > On Mon, 28 Aug 2006 10:13:39 +0200 > Ivan Porro <pivan@dist.unige.it> wrote: > > > > > Have a look to this article I''ve spotted time ago.. maybe > you can go > > back to people who > > wrote the article (ok, I know they used RedHat, but...) > > Hope this help > > > > ivan > > > > > http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps2q06-20050322-Sch > midt-OE.pdf > > > > > > Martin Polehla wrote: > > > Hello, > > > I''m trying to get working xen on dell poweredge 2850 with > two Intel(R) > > > Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz using gentoo amd64 distribution settings. > > > > > > When boot with gentoo sources 2.6.16-genoo-r13 or gentoo > kernel sources > > > 2.6.17, cat /proc/cpuinfo show me: > > > > > > flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic > sep mtrr pge > > > mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss > ht tm syscall > > > nx lm constant_tsc pni monitor ds_cpl cid cx16 xtpr > > > > > > But with xen kernel (I''ve tried install xen according to > > > http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xen_and_Gentoo) it didn''t > show vme support. > > > I copied .config from my gentoo sources (where vme works) > to xen sources > > > and configure xen support in kernel. I had not seen it before. But I wonder a bit, as it includes a number of systems which don''t have VT capabilities, as noted at http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/HVM_Compatible_Processors . As I understand it, running unmodified OSes such as WinXP require VT.> Have anyone xen with virtual windowsXP guest under linux xine host running ?Thanks, Mike _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
I installed Xen 3.0.2-testing on a dell with "vt" support using red hat as the base. VT support is required for HVM domains where you can install Windows OS. I had to disable USB on all the dells running linux because of IRQ contention. I also had to boot with noirqbalance in the kernel command line. Other than that, Xen with a WinXP domain worked good (besides having no sound). max ----------------------------------------------------------->Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 13:00:00 +0200 >From: Martin Polehla <polous@icewarp.com> >Subject: Re: [Xen-users] DELL PowerEdge 2850 - no CPU vme support >To: Xen-users@lists.xensource.com >Message-ID: <20060914130000.d6de4eca.polous@icewarp.com> >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII > >Hello, >I were looking for some informations about XEN on dell site, but I didn''tfound anythink usefull.> >But on: > http://www.xensource.com/community/xen30testing/summary.php >I found that dell poweredge 2850 passed tests, and also ouput from xen testcd looks good (all tests OK, kernel on xen test >CD says vme support (/proc/cpuinfo) etc.> >I was progessing as dell howto saying, but no succes :-( > >Have anyone xen with virtual windowsXP guest under linux xine host running?> >any suggesntions ? > >thanks >p0l0us > >On Mon, 28 Aug 2006 10:13:39 +0200 >Ivan Porro <pivan@dist.unige.it> wrote: > > > Have a look to this article I''ve spotted time ago.. maybe you can go > back to people who > wrote the article (ok, I know they used RedHat, but...) > Hope this help > > ivan > > http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps2q06-20050322-Schmidt-OE.pdf > > > Martin Polehla wrote: > > Hello, > > I''m trying to get working xen on dell poweredge 2850 with two Intel(R) > > Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz using gentoo amd64 distribution settings. > > > > When boot with gentoo sources 2.6.16-genoo-r13 or gentoo kernel sources > > 2.6.17, cat /proc/cpuinfo show me: > > > > flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge > > mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm syscall > > nx lm constant_tsc pni monitor ds_cpl cid cx16 xtpr > > > > But with xen kernel (I''ve tried install xen according to > > http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xen_and_Gentoo) it didn''t show vme support. > > I copied .config from my gentoo sources (where vme works) to xen sources > > and configure xen support in kernel.
