Hi, Guys. I was just wondering which distros do you use on your dom0s and why? I think it would be interesting to discuss about this; the pros and cons of using distro X or Y as a dom0; what do you guys think? -- Eduardo Costa Lisboa _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I suspect this would just turn into "My favourite distro is X". Still I use Debian. Because: * The base install is tiny. * The security and package support is good. * It is trivial to create new Xen instances via debootstrap/xen-tools. * I understand how it sets up networking scripts + daemons. * There are good Debian packages of Xen available, thanks to many good people. ObBias: I''m a Debian developer and use it everywhere I can. There''s no real answer. It''s mostly a matter of preference. Debian could have the best packages and scripts, but some people will still refuse to use it. Gentoo could be the most tunable or whatever, but people don''t like that one, either. RedHat makes a lot of people throw up, but it''s pretty stable. That''s five weeks of this thread degrading into an argument, condensed. -- Christopher G. I found it simple to use and am recommending it as our internal tutorial at NetApp. However, others here are using Debian as the Dom0 Linux. I think it all boils down to personal preference, and/or introduction to Xen. -- Randy _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
Linux From Scratch, latest version. I''m working on CentOS now so we''ll see how that goes. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Debian is great, use it for everything i can cause of all the reasons above minimal install security. I just wish I could get all the features of asterisk@home on it. so until i can ill be working with centos as well. On 3/17/06, John R. It''s also very convenient to install as a domU, since you can just boot a NetBSD/xen installer kernel and do a regular install under Xen (you don''t have to generate a partition image manually). Also you can dedicate it just one block device and sub-partition that, which is, AFAIK, not possible with Linux (you have to give Linux three block devices if you want three partitions). Used as it was the first system that I tried that didn''t hang with the supplied Franken-kernel. Luckily the Xen supplied ones work on this server as well (it''s got an old SiS board which I suspect has a problem). -- Rod _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

All my domU''s get one lvm volume as virtual block device and usually have two partitions (root + swap) there. cheers, Gerd -- Gerd ''just married'' Hoffmann <kraxel@suse.de> I''m the hacker formerly known as Gerd Knorr. http://www.suse.de/~kraxel/just-married.jpeg _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

For our servers we needed a distro with theese properties: (1) free (2) stable (3) not moving (no changing API/config file format/package dep/...) (4) recent security updates (5) longterm security update support (>= 2a) (6) server oriented debian/stable conflicts with (4) :-( debian/testing conflicts with (3) and probably (2) fedora core conflicts with (3), (5) and probably (2) RHEL, SLES conflict with (1) ubuntu/breezy conflicts with (5) and (6) (may change with dapper) I am perfectly happy with the RHEL-rebuild CentOS, it meets all our needs. The CentOS-rebuild of the upcoming RHEL5 (end of this year) will support xen out-of-the-box. I''ll checkout ubunty/dapper drake when it''s final (june), too.
