Xen devel - Dec 2004 - Kernel 2.6.10, reiser4, kernel 2.4.27 cpu load, and mailing list reply-to

Hi,

Some questions here :

1.   Is there a way to compile kernel 2.6.10 or 2.6.9-mm1 with xen 2.0?
I tried both (with mkbuildtree from linux-2.6.9-xen-sparse), and both 
failed (on different places).
My primary goal is to use reiser4 on both xen-0 and xen-U kernel, so
I''m
more
interested in -mm kernel.

2.  If I use kernel 2.4.27 (xen-U), top doesn''t show correct cpu usage 
percentage (idle %, nice %, and so on).
It shows either 0% usage on all, or 33% usage each for irq,  softirq, 
and iowait.
Is there a way to fix this? Kernel 2.6.9 shows correct cpu usage.

3.   Can someone please set "reply-to" address of this list to the
list
address?
Otherwise, some people might miss answer to some questions (since reply 
is only to the sender)
or the sender gets duplicate mail (from Reply-All).

Executive summary: this list is already setup with the correct solution
to the problem.  Address complaints to MUA authors who don''t support
it.

One thing that doesn''t appear to be said in either of those position
pieces is that there''s a better solution than either munging the
reply-to or doing a reply to all (which tends to produce extra copies
to an ever-growing list of people who already get a copy due to being
subscribed.  I can''t fathom why Chip overlooked this problem with his
"solution" to the problem).

The correct solution is an explicit reply-to-list header, of course.

If you examine the headers of traffic from this list (and, IME,
somewhere around half of the other lists you''re subscribed to),
you''ll
find a header that serves this purpose.  The chief drawback with this
solution is merely that it still can''t be relied upon to be present,
let alone in the same form, from list to list, and MUAs don''t generally
support it.  Yet.

The Linux sparse tree in xen-2.0-testing.bk and xen-unstable.bk has
been updated to 2.6.10.  The -mm tree should include support for arch/xen,
and should work on xen-2.0 and xen-2.0-testing.

I tried this (top in Linux 2.4.28) just now and top works except that
nothing ever is accounted as system time, this needs to be fixed.  But
I definitely don''t see the only-0%/33% usages like you''re
reporting.

Patching 2.6.10 with 2.6.10-rc3-mm failed (many rejects).
Will the sparse tree work for 2.6.10-rc3?

I use 2.4.27, since 2.4.28-sparse was not in the sparse-tree back then.
I''ll try the 2.4.28 on the new xen-2.0 testing.

ah I see, 2.6.10-rc3-mm only iuncludes the changes we need outside
of arch/xen, drivers/xen and include/asm-xen.  You could try using
the arch/xen, drivers/xen and include/asm-xen directories from the
2.6.10 sparse tree, although there might be changes to arch/i386
or include/asm-i386 which need to be merged.

My private xen-2.0-testing tree had support for 2.6.10-rc3 for a while,
those changes were now pushed to xen-2.0-testing when we updated to 2.6.10.
You could use bk undo to roll back to a version which used 2.6.10-rc3.

We only support official Linux releases, but anybody is welcome to support
additional trees.  It''s not that hard but it''s not too
exciting work,
requires knowledge of Xen to decide which changes will need special handling
when you apply arch/i386 changes to arch/xen and you have to be diligent
when keeping the tree uptodate so that you don''t miss any changes to
files
we copy/modify.
