It does this in XP and 2000 RootsMagic 4 runs perfect under Wine 1.3.8 except when it goes to an Internet site as part of it's function. When it does I get this error screen: RootsMagic has encountered an unexpected error: Socket Error # 11001 Host not found. The rest works fine. It works fine in Vista. Any suggestions? --- Bob

Here is the link to the debug log (log.txt): http://pastebin.com/cu2pAuLd It was produced using the command: wine RootsMagic.exe &> log.txt RootsMagic4 works except when it goes to: https://new.familysearch.org. Let me know if you need more or for me to produce a different log. --- Bob
Winsock trace of RootsMagic.exe is here: http://pastebin.com/tXBtDmJm I used this command: WINEDEBUG=+winsock wine RootsMagic.exe &> /tmp/output.txt --- Bob
The log shows that the program does several connections to the server and send/receive a lot of data but suddenly it tries a different approach to resolve the server address and this results in an error. Is it possible to download this program? Can you write steps to reproduce? Error: trace:winsock:WS_getaddrinfo "api.familysearch.org", (null) 0x2be6200 -> 0x612e714 -5
You can download a "Trial" version of RootsMagic4 (RM) from here: http://www.rootsmagic.com/ The trial version is not crippled though the print function does not work. I think the link thing might work. The site to which it is linked is: https://new.familysearch.org That site requires membership so RM will ask for a UI and PW. RM gives me the socket error message AFTER I am signed in. It even displays information from the new.familysearch, but I get the error after it does. We are very close. After the error it is difficult to terminate RM. RM support number is 1-801-489-3102 (-8 GMT). The author of it is Bruce Buzbee. His email is bruce at rootsmagic.com. They do NOT support Linux. --- Bob .
Roots Magic Essentials (RME) has many core features found in Roots Magic. I am sure it will include access to https://new.familysearch.org (NFS) because that is one of it's significant features.>From RME you go to to NFS when you click on the TREE icon while browsing the DB. When you do so you will be required to enter a UI and PW. That is where the socket error occurs.I can find no place where you can go to NFS on the menu items. Support answers the phone only Monday through Friday. I will ask and tell you after I talk with them on Monday. I believe difficulty is at NFS. It is when I am going to them that I get the error. RM functions in every way . . . it is NFS that the socket error occurs. Any ideas? --- Bob
You have to create a database or enter a genealogy of yourself. That takes only a moment. Thereby you created the DB necessary to use the App. However, you will NOT be able to reproduce my difficulty unless you have a PW and UI issued by https://new.familysearch.org. I know that is necessary for your to see my difficulty. As it works in Vista I think my difficulty might be solved if I could locate a necessary file . . . . --- Bob
