Hi to all, My first post... I just installed the drafting package CadStd under Wine 1.0.1. It loads all right, but any movement of the mouse in the drawing window portion generates an error pop-up "Access violation at address 0000000B". The mouse works all right in the control sections. I assume some utility file is restricting access to raise the error, but that's a guess. Any suggestions? I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, and I tried both the Lite and Pro versions of CadStd. The AppDB listings indicate the program works, so it must be something unique to my setup. There are no unusual messages in the Terminal window indicating anything obviously related. I'm using the older version of Wine because I have another program that has a regression problem under newer versions. Alan

Wine 1.0.1 is unsupported and if you look at the AppDB the version that the program works with is probably much newer than it (Wine 1.0.1 is almost three years old.) Can you try to install a newer version, from source, and then run both Wine(s) side-by-side by installint CadStd in a separate Wine Prefix? Thank you. James McKenzie
Hi James, and thanks for responding, especially so soon. The other program is FutureTax, a Canadian income tax program. It likely doesn't have enough users to warrant a lot of maintenance effort. I posted a note on the AppDB to update the status for anyone interested based on my experience. As to running double versions of Wine I realize it's an option, but I'm loathe to do it simply because it complicates maintenance and upgrades on the system as a whole and introduces risk more than its worth to me. I don't need CadStd that badly, and not as urgently as the tax program. It would be nice to have them both running, but the my world won't shake if they don't. Is there any way of tracking what program access is triggering the message? I tried running winedbg, but it doesn't seem to generate any trace information. I'm not sure it's even working, as CadStd quits almost as soon as it starts under this control. (I have to stop it normally). Alan
Hi again James, Your response time borders on in-credible. Thanks.> s there a location that I can download the program to see what > happens with Wine-1.3.14? >The website is www.cadstd.com. The free version (Lite) has the same problem as the purchased one on my machine, so it should serve for a trial run.> You can try the process described in the Wine FAQ to generate a logging file? >I saw this in my general searches for related info, but didn't actually try it. I will give it a shot and get back to you. Part of the problem here is my lack of familiarity with the system at this level. It is likely I won't understand what is there, but one must try. Alan

There certainly isn't any rush from my standpoint. Please don't upset your life to help. I appreciate the help in any case. CadStd has been around for quite awhile, but I'm familiar with it and haven't found anything better to date. But, as I said before, it isn't a big deal if I lose it at this point. I tried the winedebug command as per your suggestion. specifically WINEDEBUG=+event,+eventlog,+scroll,+message,+msgbox wine cadstd.exe&>/home/alan/Desktop/output.txt It showed the Access violation messages all right, but I couldn't make any sense of the system calls. I zipped the output, but there doesn't appear to be an attachment option in the list above. The file is 20,000 lines long (about 133k zipped)! I will await your run results, whenever you get to them. Thanks for the great support. Alan
Hi again, re the Pastebin suggestion: the raw file is 2.8MB and pastebin has a limit of 1MB. Perhaps I could attach the tarball (133k) to a private e-mail? You could forward it to others who are interested. Alternately I could edit or try to shorten the file by selecting different arguments and running it again. In that case I'd need to know what arguments you would like me to use for winedebug. If I try to edit it it would be unwise to assume I wouldn't trim needed data inadvertently. In the interest of respecting your privacy I thought I'd better ask before sending anything (using the private message option at left). Sorry for any hassle. Alan

Re posting the tarball: I haven't tried, but... Good news. I updated my version of Wine to 1.3 beta and it appears to have cleared the problem on CadStd. It works, at least in regard to the old problem. I haven't exercised it apart from trying the control that raised the problem. That still leaves me with the problem on FutureTax (www.futuretax.ca) as it now hangs with a unsupported operation error when I try to load an existing file. Strategically it would be more productive to try to clear the FT error than to get CadStd working under the old version of Wine. See my post above (Feb 28 2011 9:41) if this doesn't make sense. Thanks for the help to both James and perryh. The support has been great! Sorry for misdirecting any effort. Now that I know how to do it I'll try to get some debug info on the FutureTax problem, and post any findings under a thread linked to that program. Thanks again for the help here. Alan
