wine users - Feb 2011 - World in Conflict wont start, read all guides, still no luck

i have followed the instructions here on wine hq to the letter on how to get
this game running, but it just wont do it. my last attempt seemed to be working
until i got to the message that says "no 3d hardware detected" and
crashes back to desktop, like every single time i tried in the past. i am about
to throw my computer against the wall. can anyone offer any last suggestions
before i do?
my setup is this:

wine 1.2.2
ubuntu 10.10 x32
2.1 ghz processor w/ intel graphics
3gb ram

for all intents and purposes, there shouldnt be any issues, as the game has a
gold rating.

Get an nVidia card.  Intel's Linux drivers do a very poor job of 
supporting 3D, if at all.

Thanks for the reply, but that was more of a statement than anything else. I can
see why you would think the card is the issue, but the guide here on wine hq
says you are likely to get an error message even after the fixes. I think there
is something other than graphics that is causing the issue. I've looked
through the replies on the world in conflict page here, and nowhere are the
words "nvidia", "intel", or "graphics chip"
mentioned. I'm inclined to think that something isn't loading correctly,
but I don't know what it might be. I'm no expert.

how do i run the game with the terminal? i know you start the command with
"wine".

Try in virtual desktop mode (enable via winecfg).

If you running CD/DVD version, try using "no-cd" patch.

im not sure that would fix the problem. in the guide here on wine, it says you
dont need one, and im not getting a "no cd" error. something isnt
starting correctly, but i have no idea what.

Try it anyway, just to be sure. Deplete all your options, maybe it unexpectedly
works. ;)

Of course, if this turns out to be a regression in Wine in the end, then that
only serves to improve Wine in the future. But first, try stuff out.

Try disabling gameux.dll in winecfg.

no change. ive also got a thread over at ubuntu forums that is covering the same
