Hi, I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this... I'm using an ASUS X59GL using Ubuntu 10.10, 64 bit - 4Gb ram, nvidia Nvidia GeForce 8200M G (256Mb Graphics?) - I'm using the Nvidia drivers too... I can play a game (Star Wars Rebel commando / Tomb Raider Underworld), however, at random times the system crashes - big style, to the point that the entire machine just switches off! - not pretty. I'm pretty sure it's not the system itself - under all other circumstances, it's rock-steady, and as I've been dealing with Linux machines for 10+ years, I'd hope I now know how to set one up... Is there anything that can be done so that when a game goes bang, it doesn't take the system with it? (let me know log files you need if there's anything that can be gleaned from them :-) ) - I'm partly guessing it's to do with windows code running in a 64 bit environment? Many thanks in advance... Carl.

Thanks for the replies - hmmm - I can't say I'm convinced about the overheating issue - a) I always use the machine on a flat-table-top, i.e. good ventilation, and b) I do a lot of video work on the machine, and I'm used to driving the machine flat-out for long periods... I'm aware that wine is a user-level process, however, I'm wondering about the possibility of compatibility of nvidia drivers - especially within a 64 bit environment? The games run fine within vista (32 bit)... Version information as per FAQ: NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 260.19.06 Mon Sep 13 04:29:19 PDT 2010 GCC version: gcc version 4.4.5 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.4.4-14ubuntu5) Thanks Carl. As a matter of interest, is the Mac running X86 style processors? - I could understand the fans going nuts if it's trying to emulate X86 within a 68000 processor environment... - sorry it's been a while since I've worked on Macs... ;-)
