wine users - Nov 2010 - trying to run geneforge in wine

I am fairly new to Linux and Wine. I have finally got around to trying some
games in Wine. I am running Ubuntu lucid lynx and wine 1.2 and want to play the
Geneforge games from spiderweb software. The app data base says that it is
supposed to run well, but it loads, the menu screen is fine, then when I go to
start a new game the mouse is nearly impossible to control, it is jumping around
the screen kind of at random. Then, if I get through that and start the game,
the character won't move.
Visually, the game looks perfect, it is just the mouse that I am having trouble
with. Anyone have any ideas on how to make the mouse behave?

I got geneforge 2 to work and then I got a message when I started Wine about
updating the settings or something. Since then, the mouse has been a pain. It
took me over ten minutes to try to sell stuff to one of the merchants, because
the mouse jumps all over the screen and doesn't recognize clicks all the
time.
Anyone got any ideas?
