wine users - Nov 2010 - can't launch Steam.exe bin/vgui2.dll error

The following is my sysinfo...

Gentoo Linux 32-bit current
Nvidia Driver 260.19.12 (current)
Wine version 1.3.5


I can install steam... once if starts updating it stops with the following.

After I the install crashes/stops... I can run Steam.exe within it's home
directory it seems to update.... then I get the fatal error can't run
bin/vgui2.dll  Every fix I found that works for other people does not work for
me...  I tried compiling a vanilla wine... but get even more errors then now.

Here is the output when I get the vgui2.dll error.

I have no idea how to fix this since I've already tried all the fixes I
found on forums, etc.  Deleted *blob file,  .wine directory... reinstalled...
launched Steam.exe from it's own directory..  I still get the same vgui.dll
error.  Any help at all is appreciated.

This is what supported here. Your distro tends to break all programs by not
configuring them right/adding unsupported patches.

Compile vanilla Wine (no extra added patches, make sure to fix all
dependencies)! For support for your distro's Wine refer to gentoo forum.

Yes we are.  Gentoo does things to the distribution that breaks the ability to
build Wine from our download package.

Well.  To start run ./configure and look at the log.  This should state that
certain files are missing.  Get them, install them and then Wine should be
buildable/runable.

Missing dependencies are not optional.  They are required to build Wine, they
just are not installed with your distribution.
