Firstly I'm quite new to linux so don't hit me too hard! I have two linked windows programs I'm trying to get to run. They are part of a set by moneysoft: Money Manager Business Edition (which works ok) and Final Accounts, which will not load. It seems that there was a bug fixed for Money Manager (number was 14000's) and it needed wine 1.1.28. I'm running 1.1.30 I've tried to a general update to update wine to the latest (I'm using ubuntu 9.10) but get an error thus: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. Can anybody help me please. I HAVE to run these programs and its the only thing that's stopping me from giving up on windows for my next pc. thanks

On the other hand you'll never get a working knowledge of unix that way, but I suppose most people don't want to learn the details anyway. Ubuntu's package manager is one of those pretty guis that hides the details from you, ie. it uses the old command-line utility to install the packages for you -- when it works. dpkg doesn't always work, though, and prints an error just like your problem. You need to open a Terminal window (the equivalent of a DOS prompt) and type the quoted part of the error message and hit Enter. Terminal (in gnome) is in the Applications/Accessories menu.
Thanks I'm happier with terminal IF I know all the commands and I'v a long way to go on that! Spent many years using cpm, zsystem, drdos, and now use ptsdos 32 the russian military one that is very good. I use ptsdos for control systems. Regading the dpkg problem I found a similar link in the ubuntu forum and solved it (I hope). Regarding the Final Accounts problem, I was able to then pick up the update that said wine 1.2 but loaded 1.1.43 and runs the accounts package ok. THAT MEANS I HAVE NO MORE PROGRAMS THAT I NEED A MICROSOFT OS FOR!!!!!! Thanks for the help. My 12 year old dual p3 machine will be reformated fro win 2k to linux this afternoon...... susi or ubuntu??

Better yet, try several distros and see which you prefer. All that will cost you is download time and bandwidth plus burning a DVD for each distro you try. Martin
Martin I have tried a few and liked gobo from the file structure point but just could not get it to update even after hours of compiling it would bun out on one point or another and I think it just did not like my hardware I'll download redhat and try it. thanks
