I am using Mac OS Tiger 10.4 and am still trying to get Portal by Valve to run. The only problem is that it says "Unable to create D3D device" and crashes, no matter what dxlevel I put into the launch options.

I have: The newest version of Wine, as I installed only about a week ago through MacPorts. Mac OS 10.4.1 Tiger A fresh build of X11 through MacPorts X11 and wine are working very well together, but this Direct3D problem is annoying, as Portal and the rest of the Orange Box is what I intended to play in the first place using Wine. By the way, Steam works terrific!
Have you tried any other 3D rendering apps in Wine... do they work? Are you running it in a virtual desktop?
No, I have not tried any other 3d rendering applications, but it is not in a virtual desktop. What is another good (but free) 3d application to try?

Neverball works perfectly in wine. So how can I fix the Unable to create D3D device error?
