I want to upgrade Wine 1.0.1 (from the repositories) to 1.1.26. (tar file). Other than making sure I have proper dependencies, I'm not not too sure what else has to be done. Do I need remove the 1.0.1 first, or will 'what I do' with the file I downloaded (compile from source?) update it? I'm not too sure how all this works, I just know I can fuddle my way around to make things happen. I looked around the site but couldn't find anything written for people of my level of ignorance. Thanks.

Uninstall the package version before installing the version you compile yourself.
