wine users - Dec 2008 - no Half Life 2 - Steam crash

I'm using WINE on Ubuntu (intrepid) and I was able to install Steam and it
works just fine.
I installed Half Life 2 but I c sseem to get it to run. When I open it from
steam, steam crashes. When I open it with WINE (without steam open) steam
crashes as soon as it gets me logged in.
anyone have a similar problem?

Read Steam's and Half-Life 2 readme on AppDB. There are number of things you
can try.
