If I understand correctly, Ogg Vorbis is a lossless format. But then why does it support bitrates? Ogg Vorbis does not delete any information. When I encode a 128 kbit MP3 file to 32 kbit OggVorbis, the resulting file has a bitrate of about 110 kbit. And when I encode it to 320 kbit, the file will be bigger, but the quality won't improve because of the quality of the original. So what purpose does bitrates in Ogg Vorbis have? --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. The lowest bitrate at ogg is 112 kbit (VBR). If you want to get a smaller file, you have to downsample the original wav file (44khz to 22 khz). (the ogg encoder doesn't do this) On the higher bitrates you get better quality, but the difference is little... Try to encode a wav file (not an mp3), and maybe then you will hear the difference... --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. Hongli Lai a écrit:> If I understand correctly, Ogg Vorbis is a lossless format. If you want a lossless format, try Monkey's Audio (http://www.monkeysaudio.com). Resulting files are two-third smaller than the originals. Useful if (as me) you don't care about listening music on audio gear except computer. I personnalyuse APE for archiving purposes and Mp3pro (or the most compressing format I find) for everyday listening. When a new format is coming on the streets, I just need to reencode my Monkey's audio files! --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body.
