educational doc about FLAC
Hello FLAC-dev, Do you know if there is some good educational documentation showing FLAC's internal design in a few steps, like this doc for monkeysaudio : http://www.monkeysaudio.com/theory.html If not, what is the principle of the algorithm in a few big steps (example : 1. Conversion to mid/side instead of L/R channels 2. Predictor 3. Entropy coding) ? Best regards. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed.....

Feature request FLAC
...n. Currently I have to use SoX for conversion which is slow and painfull. Better would be to have an option in FLAC to skip one channel and encode the other channel as mono (as seen in LAME) 2. Develop DLL for EAC I use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) for CD ripping. It would be great to have an DLL (as in Monkeysaudio) to directly rip to FLAC and not have a WAV-file as intermediate 3. Album-gain based on individual replay-gain values I encode each file with an replay-gain value. If I want to add album-gain values with metaflac all files are analyzed again. Could the album gain value be calculated by using exist...

FLAC utilities for Monkey's Audio GUI: useful?
FLAC solution for MSVS contains two projects: flac_mac and flac_ren. They are intended to work together with Monkey's Audio GUI frontend ( http://www.monkeysaudio.com/images/screenshot.png ) as explained here: http://wayback.archive.org/web/20060428142919/http://flac.sourceforge.net/documentation.html#monkey Version 4.01b2 (February 17, 2006) still have out-of-box support for WavPack. Version 4.06 (March 17, 2009) doesn't have out-of-box support for 3rd...

bitrtate peeling and lossless compression
I just read some of the discussion on the list about 'bitrate peeling' and remembered an interview of Monty that I have read recently. In it he says that Vorbis uses MCDTs <sp> and that these are theoretically reversable. And now, I learn that theoretically we can use bitrate peeling to make smaller files from larger ones, and that leads to my question. Could I theoretically

Questions about bitrates
If I understand correctly, Ogg Vorbis is a lossless format. But then why does it support bitrates? Ogg Vorbis does not delete any information. When I encode a 128 kbit MP3 file to 32 kbit OggVorbis, the resulting file has a bitrate of about 110 kbit. And when I encode it to 320 kbit, the file will be bigger, but the quality won't improve because of the quality of the original. So what purpose
