[vorbis] Are AMDs preferable? [was: Choosing a processor]
Hi again, On a related not, I think I read in the mailing-list archives that the Pentium III wasn't "ideal" for .ogg operations; are AMD's processors more appropriate/do they perform better? Thanks, Joane _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. The problem with AMD's processors is that the only company that seems to make motherboard chipsets for them is VIA, and they seem to be having trouble making a product that is 100% stable. I'm sure that others have had better luck than I have, but my experiences with VIA-based system boards have not been pleasant ones. -- agreenbu @ nyx . net andrew michael greenburg http://www.nyx.net/~agreenbu/ --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. But any x86 cpu is severly limited by its tiny register set and the weird fpu stack thingy. You better get yourself something non-x86 if you like _real_ good performance. And you said you only want to run linux on it; well, linux runs on virtually anything, so that's no problem then :-) Dagdag, Segher --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body.
