[theora] Chris DiBona's passing comment on Theora + Youtube on the WhatWG list
Chris DiBona made an odd comment regarding Theora on the WhatWG list. I am explicitly not calling for people to go sign up over there and complain. Google has done many good things for open video, and I'm sure they will continue to do so in the future. I thought the comparison I did for my response would be interesting to other people here: http://people.xiph.org/~greg/video/ytcompare/comparison.html

The guy's stupid. In my case OGG Theora is far superior compared to Flash based videos. Most of the time videos on YouTube are overloading my CPU, for a crappy quality on top of that. And it's a 1.6GHz cpu ! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://lists.xiph.org/pipermail/theora/attachments/20090614/78d914d4/attachment.htm

[theora] Chris DiBona's passing comment on Theora + Youtube on the WhatWG list
Gregory, That's awesome work you've done! I was also totally shocked at that comment of his, which is why I asked him to prove his claim by doing some tests. I am confident he cannot uphold that claim, since in my experience the files turn out smaller most of the time. I hope we will do the tests for himself, so he will be forced to take back his own FUD. It's plain amazing what myths are being created and repeated on Theora! Great effort! Cheers, Silvia. Because it's really damning if WhatWG is susceptible to that sort of FUD nonsense. Remco

[theora] Chris DiBona's passing comment on Theora + Youtube on the WhatWG list
I'll be putting this up on the mozilla hacks blog on Monday. We can echo it pretty widely from there. It's time to change people's opinion of Theora in the real world. Actually, thinking about it, we haven't spent enough time talking about the fact that Vorbis really _is_ a big improvement over mp3 at the same bit rates and that good sound can make even a crappy video seem better than it is. I wonder how much "extra" bandwidth Vorbis provides that could be used to improve video quality even more? Probably not much so it probably only has an effect at lower bit rates. --Chris On Jun 14, 2009, at 1:34 AM, Gregory Maxwell wrote:> Chris DiBona made an odd comment regarding Theora on the WhatWG list. > > I am explicitly not calling for people to go sign up over there and > complain.
