Chris DiBona's passing comment on Theora + Youtube on the WhatWG list
Chris DiBona made an odd comment regarding Theora on the WhatWG list. I am explicitly not calling for people to go sign up over there and complain. Google has done many good things for open video, and I'm sure they will continue to do so in the future. I thought the comparison I did for my response would be interesting to other people here: http://peopl...

Fwd: [whatwg] Cue points in media elements
...ints interesting. Maybe someone here has an answer to Brian on how it could work or what should be improved in the HTML5 spec to make it work... Cheers, Silvia. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Brian Campbell <Brian.P.Campbell@dartmouth.edu> Date: Apr 29, 2007 5:14 PM Subject: [whatwg] Cue points in media elements To: whatwg@whatwg.org I'm a developer of a custom engine for interactive multimedia, and I've recently noticed the work WHATWG has been doing on adding <video> and <audio> elements to HTML. I'm very glad to see these being proposed for additio...

Should Join Discussion - Fwd: [whatwg] Give guidance about RFC 4281 codecs parameter
Hello, You guys might want to join this discussion. (And maybe some others too.) On the WhatWG mailing list, there's been a fury of e-mails about adding a <video> element to HTML5. They're talking about codecs and containers now. It might be helpful to have your representatives there. And help shape things. See ya ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dave Singer...

[whatwg] HTML5 audio tag
In order to do this you'd need to know /in advance/ exactly which Ogg pages were audio and which were video so you could choose to only download the vorbis pages. The upcoming Ogg Skeleton index does not index pages at a high enough granularity to facilitate this. It could, but then the index would be a lot bigger. I also wonder if the time/server overhead of setting up new HTTP

using Kate for WebVTT encapsulation
...illa.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481529 I've just posted a reply there mentioning how I envisage in-band WebVTT support to be provided through Kate. I want to ask your opinion. In case you haven't heard about WebVTT yet, it's the time-aligned text format that has been developed by the WHATWG as the baseline text format for HTML5 media elements, see http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/webvtt.html . Also see http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/multipage/video.html#the-track-element for how to include it with a audio or video element. My idea is that - because...

Theora patent question
Does the reason Theora is relatively safe from patent infringement lawsuit have more to do with it actually not being encumbered, or is it because its use is decentralized? For example, FreeType is not patent-free, nor is Linux, yet they succeed because on the one hand, they are open source, and those who maintain them do not guarantee anything regarding patents, it is up to each individual user

Why the Internet is so insecure
https://github.com/whatwg/html/issues/2119 Major flaw in how the specification for window.opener() works resulting in a major phishing vulnerability that is cake to pull off. The right solution isn't considered because it would break compatibility with the few number sites that depend upon the broken specification e...

Http adaptive streaming for html5
...of bitrate switching would be implemented in the browser. The video element would also have to support some events like "onswichsource" with the source element in the callback so that user interfaces could be updated as the stream switched sources if necessary. ~ not necessary for the whatwg ~ Implementation wise it could work by dynamically switch streams based on how fast the next key-frame byte offset chunk was downloaded. Byte offset chunks would be defined as the byte rage between two key frames. This would be very dependent on the ogg index support so that frame accurate see...

W3C Video on the Web Workshop
List, The W3C will host a workshop to discuss video on the Web in 12-13 December 2007, San Jose, California. I think it's important that someone from Xiph, or an enthusiastic fan of Theora would participate. There is no participation fee and you do not need to be a W3C member to participate, so if you are in the area why not consider going? You only have to register to participate. All

This is a sad day for interoperability in the Web
...a formats Vorbis, Theora, and Speex. Adobe developers replied by stating it would be unwise as it would increase the file size of the Flash Player, and yet, that is what will happen now, with the unfair procedure by Adobe to ignore the backing of our formats by the W3C through SVG and SMIL, by the WHATWG through HTML 5, and by the XMPP Standards Foundation through Jabber's Jingle. There is clearly a need for a non-patented, royalty-free standard for video and audio on the web. The Xiph.Org Foundation provided such standards. Adobe Systems Incorporated decided to ignore this and back the use...

[patch] enable annodex firefox plugin for application/ogg
Hi Nils, I have applied your patch to browser_plugin at the annodex svn, thanks. Also just making sure you know: Mozilla has picked up liboggplay as a library for firefox, but has not included the browser_plugin - instead it is using their own javascript API as picked up from WHATWG's HTML5 specification. http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/content/media/video/ Thus, the browser_plugin available at annodex is only interesting from the POV that it provides more functionality and access to time-aligned annotations through CMML. This may be stuff that Mozilla is loo...

Video Accessibility work
...lla.org/Accessibility/Video_Accessibility . However, decisions on implementations and preferred formats will need community input - the wiki will only provide background information for that. The outcome of our work will ultimately be implemented and is expected to also provide a recommendation to WHATWG/W3C for what specifications to put into the HTML5 standard, but at this stage we need to explore and experiment. Let's get it right. :-) Cheers, Silvia.

Adding a data in Live OR Saving Stream on Server side.
...spoken before because we're working on basically the same thing. Now that you're trying to do live stuff, you've run into the same problems as me. There are currently no good way to sync slides and live streaming media in the web browsers today. However, based on a discussion we had in WHATWG, we added an element called startOffsetTime, which will make it possible once browsers implement it. However, I guess it'd be easier to fake syncronization with audio, as Icecast won't have to buffer as much of it, and normally the clients can get all the information quite quickly. You ca...
