rubynuby == I''m a''scared to set it all up...
I''ve been mostly lurking here with an occasional nuby question for a few
weeks now. It seems like Ruby and Rails and the many libraries and
tools growing up around it are a remarkable toolset. Unfortunately I''m
finding the whole enchilada a bit daunting.
It seems that if one is to truly tap into the power of this thing and do
a significant amount of developing, one needs

TextMate for Rails development -- why?
Greetings,
I am curious, I see quite a few references to using TextMate for
rails development. I downloaded TextMate and used it for 30 days. I
do not see what everyone is raving about. Snipplets are nice, but
other editors do the same thing, some with much more power.
Can anyone tell me what makes people draw to TextMate? Maybe I am
missing the whole reason, I''d really like to

Rails Code Indentation
Hi All,
Rails code must be readable, formatted and well indented.
I wanted to do indent code in my previous projects.
Is there any built in rails plugin/gem that can help me to
indent my existing code.
Any ideas will be really appreciated !
NOTE: Please don''t suggest editor plugins.
Thanks & Regards,

Convince me to buy TextMate!
I got a Powerbook recently and am debating buying TextMate. I installed
the trial and have checked it out, but don''t see what''s so great about
it. AFAICS it''s the Ruby and Rails macros for expansion and other stuff
that might be it. Other than that, TextMate seems like a pretty basic
editor. I currently use PSPad and Editplus, and I could probably
get/make macros

Preferred Ruby Editor/IDE for OS X?
Just a quick question, if I were tired of typing ruby into a terminal
editor, say I wanted, oh, a scroll bar, mouse support, and maybe
syntax highlighting? Anyone know os a good Ruby/Rails editor or IDE,
one that runs on OS X, possibly in Java?

OS for rails development: Windows vs. Mac?
Caveat: this is not a discussion about *hosting* a rails app on windows.
Anyway...Macs are everywhere you look when researching rails (demo vids,
tutorials, and pictures from rails training classes). I''m interested in
what the pros to using a Mac for rails development are (besides
textmate). Is it more of a cultural thing, a what would 37 signals do
thing, is it a unix thing, or

RadRails vs. Textmate
Is there anyone out there can give me a comparison between RadRails/
Aptana and Textmate? I have been using skEdit for all of my general
coding stuff, but I am now looking into getting a new editor for my
Ruby/Rails work. I know that most Mac users swear by Textmate, but I
would really like to hear some comparisons between RadRails, Textmate,
and even skEdit as well.

Textmate Backtracer 1.0

== Announcing Version 1.0 ==
The backtracer has been around for a while now, and seems to have
done its job well enough to deserve a 1.0 mark.

Whenever a Rails exception occurs, it spits out a backtrace full of
filenames and line numbers. I?ve often thought, ?Wouldn?t it be nice

Rails on a Mac - I''ve seen the light
Well I finally broke down and got me one of those Intel iMacs and a copy
of Textmate. It took me a bit to get use to Textmate but once I learned
some of the shortcuts I was cruising. Mac OS X took very little time to
get used to as I already had a decent *nix background. Up until this
point I had been primarily on Windows.
Some of the productivity highlights I''ve found:

What IDE for Rails on OSX?
Hi,
I''m using TextMate for rails development on OSX, but have reached a point
where I need to run in a debugger and be able to step through the code as it
executes. I have previously used the Eclipse Ruby plug in and another IDE
for ruby development on windows, but never figured out how to run a Rails
app in the debugger.
How are other textmate users debugging and what else is there on

IDE recommendations?
I was wondering if there are any IDEs out there that has autocomplete
features for win32.
It would be perfect if it could do something akin to what DHH is doing
on the screencast hosted on the rails website.

favored development environment
I am about to purchase a laptop strictly for development (ruby &
rails) and then leverage my existing large screen monitor with it when
in the office. Laptop monitor for running tests, large screen for
development etc. Wondering what the consensus is now on most ideal
environment for rails at this point? Macbook pro + textmate? Pc with
unbuntu + vim(or whatever)? what are most professional

The lone PC in Raleigh
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Raleigh area Ruby users Meetup.
It was very interesting and very informative.
I did feel a bit out of place when we noticed that of the 11-12 people
there, I was the only one with a PC laptop. The rest were shiny macs.
Ah well, I need to replace this thing soon, and now that BootCamp is
out, I really have no more excuses. This way I can test

MASC = A New Way to Use Textmate Snippets
Just thought I''d announce this on the Rails list since I know several
of you use Textmate: there''s a new feature I''m calling "Multiple
Arbitrary Simultaneous Carets" or MASC for short, which is available
in my personal TM bundle. It''s been handy enough for me that I
thought others might enjoy it.

Ruby, Rails & Linux - Which distro
Did I sound like our President? :)
<spin>
I didn''t explain myself well. I am not thinking of buying the
identically equipped PC laptop either at the same price.
If I had a $2500-$3000 budget (laptop, Applecare + case etc) I might
consider the Mac, but then in the PC laptop universe there are more
options of going with the slower processors (T2300 or T2400) for about
$1,000 less
