Samba Administrator E-zine
Hello All,
I have been talking to some of the team members about an idea that I have
for a monthly e-zine for Samba Administrators. This e-zine would provide
Samba specific solutions, as well as solutions for ansilary Linux tasks and
service integration, and it would provide help for Windows pertinent
administration tasks that a Samba Administrator would face.
I am looking for a good core

Using speex!
Just a quick note to let you guys know I've started encoding my church's
sermons to Speex format as well as MP3.
The audio is recorded off cassette (yuk) onto my PC as a 16kHz 24-bit
sample rate stereo WAV in Audacity (the PA system is mono, but sometimes
one channel of the tape performs better than the other...). I then trim
off the non-sermon bits of the service, normalize/compress

Guest shares
I'm trying to setup Samba to function like a regular XP box connected to a
workgroup. In that I mean that there is no password to browse or to connect
to certain shares. Just like an XP box in Workgroup mode. Just connect and
go. I have tried using various combinations of public = yes, guest ok =
yes, and guest only = yes with no luck. No matter what I do I'm prompted

vorbis vs. mp3 vs. realaudio
Hello,
how good is the quality with very low bitrates like 16kbps mono. 16
kbps files compressed with lame sound awful, realaudio is much better.
Will vorbis sound as good as realaudio with low bitrates?
How fast is vorbis (in comparison to lame).

Newbie STILL trying to limit bandwidth - is this script wrong?
My previous message
(http://mailman.ds9a.nl/pipermail/lartc/2004q2/012285.html) didn''t generate
any replies, so I thought I''d try posting what I''ve done trying to solve my
own problem, in hopes that someone will take pity and show me if/where I''m
going wrong.
Just to recap, I''m trying to accomplish this on my server, which streams

And the winner is... (C't audio-codec test)
Salve,
the German IT-Magazin (#1) www.heise.de/ct has made an
audio-codec test online. The reader were asked to download
2 x 7 audiofiles, listen to them and rank them (As I wrote before)
http://www.xiph.org/archives/vorbis/200208/0185.html
The 7 files have been Wave, MP3, MP3Pro, AAC, Ogg Vorbis,
WMA, RealAudio in 64kBit/s and 128kBit/s for a stereo sample
of 3 genres: pop, jazz, classic. The

New to list -- glennrp
Hello, speexers.
I'm new to the list and new to audio compression. I've been asked to
look into creating a digital archive of 20-minute speeches (sermons)
and speex seems to be what I need.
My experience is in image compression; I shepherded gzip, deflate, zlib,
and png through the IETF process, put "image/png" through
the IANA registration process, and I maintain several

Helix into Icecast2 loopback
Hello.
I've made some progress on the issue. I found a tool called TrPlayer which
is a text mode front end for real player - initially developed for the use
of the visually impaired. The theory is that I can use this and pipe the
live stream into vsound which then in turn is passed into ices or another
source client. Trouble is, I'm having all sorts of trouble compiling
Trplayer on the

make lo-fi sound as good as RealAudio?
Can someone who really knows the Ogg command-line encoder, help recommend the best setting for 33.6k modem stereo music streaming?
(56k doesn't count cuz many people's 56k modems don't work at a full 56k, and I want them to be able to surf CD Baby at the same time as listening. 2 minutes / 120 seconds of audio should be about 400k.)
I'm at my wit's end: tried everything I

not sure
I just received an e-mail from V.K. Quach and I am not really sure what
it meant. So if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. I
just sent out a message to the list regarding a newbie question.
The reply I received was as follows:
Ich bin bis 17. Okt. 2003 abwesend. In dringenden F?llen wenden Sie sich

Helix into Icecast2 loopback
Hello all,
I am a little new to Linux so I would appreciate some assistance with this
issue.
I have been running a Helix server streaming RealAudio encoded content live
and on-demand for a while. For the live stream, I use the Real equivalent to
Ices which on the Helix platform is called SLTA. All the content on the
server is encoded as RealAudio.
I have also successfully setup an Icecast2

Ices 0.4 ices.cue file error
After several days of uninterupted operation (about 4 or 5 days I believe),
ices-0.4 starts to return this error countless times:
"Could not open cuefile [/tmp/ices.cue] for writing, cuefile not updated"
This error eventually causes the stream to misreport the name of the
currently playing song. Instead of reporting the current song, it reports
the song found in the now defunct cue

Winamp Wave Out resampler (was- make lo-fi sound as good as RealAudio?
Shawn sent me a copy of the non-Direct Sound version of this output plugin,
and I'm hosting it on my web site's rare software page:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/bhafool1/rarities/
I've found it adds far more smoothness and clarity to various low
sample-rate audio files, including an 80-minute speech I mentioned
previously, due to my soundcard's approach to D-to-A conversion

low bitrate sounding better? (20k-30k)
At SxSW I ran into the Xiph gang and someone said something in passing that the new version of Ogg Vorbis would have much-improved low-bitrate quality.
Wondering - true? Details? ETA?
At CD Baby all lo-fi soundclips are still in the SFERA format*. At 20k bitrates, they sound GREAT which is why I stick with it, but I'd much rather switch them ALL over to OGG if there was a way to make

Poor quality of low bitrate encoding
In testing, I have found that both MP3 and RealAudio 3(!) are much
better sounding at bitrates from 8 to 40-something kbps than Ogg
Vorbis. This definatly needs drastic improvents and I know that 1.1
will be focusing on improvements in those areas but that seems pretty
far off(a few months minimum) which leaves low-bitrate streams sounding
pretty bad.

Throttle New Connections?
All,
Is anyone using iptables (recent module), or any other alternatives, to
throttle the number of new imap or pop connections per minute? We have
some applications that like to login every second to pull mail using
imap, so we'd like to protect the entire dovecot server from these
applications. We've already made the change over to high-perf mode, but
we still need some type of denial

pop3-throttle
Hello
I am having a hard time with users using POP while leaving mailboxes
of several gigabyte cumulated. This causes a lot of disk I/O and kills
performancs for everyone. I try to encourage people migrating to
IMAP, but that migration will take some time, and therefore I am looking
for alterantive ways to workaround the problem.
I found pop3-throttle-plugin.c, which seems a smart way to solve

Using TBF to throttle a PC to 5kbps
Hi Everyone,
This is a simple question but I don''t understand why the below tbf is not
working as expected by throttling traffic to 5kbps
If I throttle a PC''s traffic using the below when traffic exceeds 5kbps
packets start getting dropped (as they should) but all traffic gets dropped.
not just the bit over 5kbps.

throttle lan client only
I have the below example working on tagging a "source" and throttling all
the clients for traffic control. However, I need to throttle a specific
client on the lan side only. The solution could be with or with out the
use of iptables, it doesn''t matter.
this works: eth0=wan eth1=lan
