minimum processor\ram requirements for decoding vorbis files
Assuming Linux as the operating system, what would be the minimum processor/ram requirements to decode ogg vorbis files? I'm looking at building a vorbis player for my car, but I need to know what speed and how much ram I'll need. Thanks for the help. --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list,

install freezes at partition layout
I'm trying to install centos 5 on an old machine, a Micron with a pentium III and 250 megs of ram. I'm using the DVD image. The media check said the DVD was OK. Everything starts fine (both in graphics and text modes), untl I get to the custom partition table. The new system will go on hda, with the boot and root partition reformatted (see below). I laid it out to preserve the data on

Current hardware requirements for decoding? (skipping problem)
The vorbis FAQ mentions that decoding vorbis should use roughly the same resources as decoding MP3's, but that the current source is not optimized. So what is the current requirement? I have a Pentium 133 with 64 megs and I cannot get .ogg files to play without skipping. I've tried encoding .wav files and downloading .ogg files from www.vorbis.com and playing them on Winamp with

Skipping problems on outgoing calls (using uLaw with an internal * server through Voxee)
Hello all, I am using a headset and the X-lite softphone (sometimes I use IAXComm, but I'm having difficulties using OSS emulation with it) to connect via uLaw to my internal Asterisk server, which is a Pentium II 400 with 128 megs of RAM. After getting this headset, most or all of the echo people on the other line were complaining about is now gone, according to them. However, every

Speed of runif() on different Operating Systems
Dear list, I have noticed surprisingly big performance differences of runif() between Windows XP and (Debian) linux on similar CPUs (Pentium D 3.0GHz (WinXP)/3.2GHz (Linux)) and I wonder if there is a simple explanation for the difference. On a linux system (with a slightly better CPU and 1GB more RAM), execution of runif() seems to consume about 80% more CPU time than on a Windows XP

installing 5.3 with 512M ram really slow
I was installing centos 5.3 x86_64 on a sempron 2.7G machine with 512M ram. The install started off fine then REALLY SLOWED down about 70% into install. I did have a swap space. after that it just crawled. I tried restart the install a couple times at 512M. Same thing around 70% the slow down. I then put in 1G of RAM and everything zipped on past and finished fine. Does 5.3 have minimum

Use 8GB RAM on Pentium D?
Hello: I have a Supermicro SuperServer 5015P-TR. It has a Pentium D and is running CentOS x86_64. Can this machine use 8GB RAM? I think it should because it is running a 64 bit OS, but I am concerned because it is fundamentally 32 bit hardware. Anyone have any experience in this area? Running R on a 64 bit processor
Greetings, We recently obtained a new computer in our lab with a Pentium 4 3.86 GHz processor and 4 gb of ram running windows xp with service pack 2. After installing R on this machine, I ran a bit of code and found that the execution time was actually significantly slower than a machine running windows xp with an older Pentium chip 1.73 GHz and 1 gb of ram. The Smallest Asterisk Server Ever?
Hello all, Saturday night, after a couple of shots of bourbon, I realized that I had an old PC sitting in the garage that I could use as an Asterisk gateway if I just blew the dust off it and reloaded it with a modern Linux distribution. In my characteristically impulsive manner, I grabbed it and started cleaning it up so that I could put it in my office without my wife having a fit. The

Running CentOS on very old hardware
A friend has an old Pentium-133 laptop with 32MB of memory and a 1.3 GB hard disk that he wants to use as a web server for a very small community. Will CentOS (or any other RHEL derived distribution for that matter) install and run with acceptable performance on such a system, or will a specialized distribution like Damn Small Linux be a better choice? In this case, disk space is not a big

Are AMDs preferable? [was: Choosing a processor]
Hi again, On a related not, I think I read in the mailing-list archives that the Pentium III wasn't "ideal" for .ogg operations; are AMD's processors more appropriate/do they perform better? Question and feature requests for processor bound systems
Is there any way to disable the checksum block search in rsync, or to somehow optimize it for systems that are processor-bound in addition to being network bound? I'm using rsync on very low power embedded systems to rsync files that are sometimes comparatively large (sometimes a few hundred megs in size or larger), and am finding that just the operation of the checksumming one such file on

thin server processes slowly growing in RAM size
When I initially start up my server I have two thin processes running that are only about 200M in size. They slowly creep up a few megs an hour until now a week later they are at 400M and 300M respectively. I realize that my site (http://wlodb.com) has some intensive pages that take a couple seconds to render (most notably http://wlodb.com/compounds ) but I''m wondering if this is

Compression Artifacts at -q 5. Help!
Hi Everyone, My first posting to the list. Longtime Ogg fan, have created many .oggs, but this is the first time needing help. I've been transferring CDs to Ogg files using crip. I've been in the process of setting up a bunch of mules to transfer my music collection to electronic format, but I've found an oddity: >bash$ oggenc -q 5 oddity.wav >Opening with wav

No performance increase from dual-core processors?
Hey all, I was planning on getting a new computer for the new year to help with my dissertation research, and recently had an opportunity to compare the performance of my 1.6 GHz Pentium M laptop, and a 2.8 GHz dual-core Pentium processor (both running WinXP professional 32-bit). I run a lot of long simulations, so I was hoping to get something that would speed them up. I ran a few quick

[Flac-users] libflac memory requirements?
Hello, Can someone give me an idea of the memory requirements for using libFLAC? I'm trying to incorporate FLAC support into a player application for the Rio Receiver (see http://rioreceiver.comms.net for details), but I'm having trouble because FLAC__stream_decoder_new() is attempting to allocate 2099828 bytes for an instance of the FLAC__StreamDecoderPrivate struct. Is this accurate,

How to fit Oggs in a specific amount of space?
I took 5 albums (Classical music) and converted them to Ogg Vorbis at "Full Bitrate" (-q10) and all 5 directories take up about 775 Megs which won't fit on a CD. So I ripped them again in WAV first (And give my friend back his CDs) but now I wanna know what quality setting should I use to fit them on 1 CD (The highest possible with total space used just under 700 Megs)
