[vorbis] Current hardware requirements for decoding? (skipping problem)
The vorbis FAQ mentions that decoding vorbis should use roughly the same resources as decoding MP3's, but that the current source is not optimized. So what is the current requirement? I have a Pentium 133 with 64 megs and I cannot get .ogg files to play without skipping. I've tried encoding .wav files and downloading .ogg files from www.vorbis.com and playing them on Winamp with Windows and XMMS and ogg123 on Linux and I always get skipping problems. However, .mp3 files play flawlessly on Winamp and XMMS (though not on mpg123 for some reason). a p133 is likely just a bit under par for the beta2 decoder. If you grab the latest cvs snapshot nad compile it it will be much faster, as we've already had some optimization going on. jack. It is based in beta2 with some optimizations (a few) http://www.hispamp3.com/ogg/downloads/winamp_opt.zip -- Jose Mejuto (jmejuto@pobox.com) --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. I think I may have some hardware problem because I was swapping IRQ's in order to try different Linux OSS drivers and for some reason Winamp on Windows started working briefly. Oh well, I'm not ready to get a new laptop yet, so I'll just wait for the next beta and try again. I'm currently having no luck with the nightly-CVS snapshot either, but that's another topic.
