A killer clip
Check this clip (it's small, 373kb)
http://www.geocities.com/jdxss/udialwav.zip
It left oggenc, lame and MP+ encoders choking in dust.

Pre-echo like noises on Beta4
Hi, there.
Although I'm not a hacker at all, I noticed an audible noise on Beta
4 encoded files. So, I'd like to report it here.
I ripped and encoded 'A Day Without Rain' on the album with the same
name By Enya into Vorbis using Oggenc and Oggdrop Beta 4 from the Vorbis
site. (You know, she is quite an encoder-killer.) At all the bitrates,
files encoded by Oggdrop had audible

Few questions concerning clipping
I noticed that clipping occurs in lossy audio compression even
if there is no clipping in the original file (though the original
file has peaks that are just below the maximum). I know
that this happens due to all the filtering involved during compression,
but I'm wondering just how audible this clipping is because I don't
hear anything wrong. I mean, as things are now, is it safe to say

One important thing
Hi.
Since I'm new to this mailing list, I don't know whether this was discussed
in this mailing list, or if it is already fixed.
Anyway, the problem is that all audio encoders out there add a small amount
of silence to the start/end of the encoded file. This is usually a small
amount, around 0.03 seconds. Most of the time it goes unnoticed, BUT when
you have tracks that flow into one

Some pre-RC1 listening tests
Hello everyone,
ff123 compiled Monty's branch of the RC1 encoder, see his post on
r3mix.net forum:
http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=c&action=display&num=994299736&start=30
Anyway it only supports ~128kbps mode, so I did a quick listening
test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4.

[new?] Streaming technique
Hi,
I have a newbie question, and a not-so-newbie one. I've just found
out about Ogg, and I haven't been able to find a clear answer in
the many webpages this proyect has (btw, why not create just one
site instead of vorbis.com, ogg-vorbis.com...).
The question is, does Ogg use perceptual coding, like mp3 does? And
if so, would it be possible to build an encoder in such a way as

Winamp plug-in
When using Winamp's diskwriter with the ogg plug-in v1.13 the
resulting wav files are only named 01, 02, etc. So the original names
are lost. I hope Peter can fix this.

Lossless/lossy hybrid?
Monkey's Audio lossless compressor (currently win32 only, free but not
open-source except decoder) author is thinking to implement a kind of
audiophile-quality lossy compression which would filter "noise bits" that
are hard to encode lossless but which are (or should be) inaudible and thus
improve lossless compression (avg. 300-450kbps). I think that implementing
something like this

Interesting coding problem ..
Hi,
I have a track which when encoded with Mode_C or even Mode_E does
not encode well at all ...
It's a jazz flute track with a lot of plate echo.
The flute (centred in the mix) almost disappears ...
I am away for a few days, but if someone would like to look at this
I would be grateful ...
A small clip can be grabbed from my ftp server ...

Also, it looks like Wall Street Journal article is not available
on-line (at least to non-registered persons). If someone is registered
or have a paper edition, please post this article somewhere so that we

Winamp plug-in tag editor bug
There is a bug in winamp plug-in tag editor that corrupts
files encoded in -b192 mode - these files have trouble
with seeking. So get the latest plug-in:
http://www.blorp.com/~peter/zips/in_vorbis.exe
If some of your files have been messed up by this bug,
you have to re-encode them.

quality
Hi all!
I ran across another song that oggenc seems to have trouble to encode. The
intro of U2:s "Grace" gets its right channel messed up by oggenc, even at
the highest bitrate. Why is the bitrate only 218? Isn't that awfully
little when asking for 320?
Qualityflaws like these is the reason i prefer mp3 and mpplus today. But
vorbis is getting better for every beta, so keep up the

[Flac-users] Winamp 2/Winamp 3 and FLAC plug-ins
I know that Winamp has its loyal following. I've never used it much. Also,
I'm a novice at computer music. I've always just bought CD's and never used
computer music. So perhaps I'm an idiot or just not very music-software
literate, but I so far haven't been impressed with Winamp, or the FLAC
plug-in. Just for one example, I've got a dual-Althlon MP 2000 system

Anyway, are you using Mike Wren's installer? I'm not familiar
