uh, you must have good ears and equipment. I can hardly hear a difference, and I would say it's acceptable. It's only 127 kbps. Hi, I have a track which when encoded with Mode_C or even Mode_E does not encode well at all ... It's a jazz flute track with a lot of plate echo. The flute (centred in the mix) almost disappears ... I am away for a few days, but if someone would like to look at this I would be grateful ... A small clip can be grabbed from my ftp server ... ftp.york.ac.uk in: pub/users/rpf1 files: ps.wav - stereo RIFF file ps.ogg - mode_C encoded Thanks and regards, Rob. P.S. This came up as I have my 4 channel encoding working and can play direct audio back to 4 channels (using the SGI 4 channel hardware). +============================+====================================+ | Dr R P Fletcher (Rob) | Email R.Fletcher@york.ac.uk | | Graphics Coordinator | Phone +44 (0)1904 433816 | | Computing Service | Frontdesk +44 (0)1904 433800 | | University of York | Fax +44 (0)1904 433740 | | YORK YO10 5DD, UK | ICQ UIN 4019164 | | URL: www-users.york.ac.uk/~rpf1/ Camera: /~rpf1/robcam.html | +=================================================================+ --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-dev-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. When vorbis encoder reaches full implementation of all planned features, then it will be ready for more sophisticated tunning and that is the point when test samples are welcomed. I think it will take another year of developement before vorbis reaches full maturity - like MP+ - it was a crappy encoder last year when it appeared and now it is almost perfect... You know the saying - patience is a virtue... :-) Greetings, Aleksandar --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-dev-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. [vorbis-dev] Interesting coding problem ..
Should we be collecting these problem samples now though? So that we have them when we're there or so that we can have them as we develop?> -----Original Message----- > From: Aleksandar Dovnikovic [SMTP:aldov@EUnet.yu] > Sent: Friday, September 29, 2000 3:12 AM > To: vorbis-dev@xiph.org > Subject: Re: [vorbis-dev] Interesting coding problem .. > > Rob Fletcher <rpf1@york.ac.uk> wrote: > > > Hi, > > > > I have a track which when encoded with Mode_C or even Mode_E does > > not encode well at all ... > > > > It's a jazz flute track with a lot of plate echo. > > > > The flute (centred in the mix) almost disappears ... > > There are samples that don't sound good even using Mode 6 (oggenc beta2) > like http://sivut.koti.tpo.fi/julaak/Horn.wav (2.1MB) > > But I think it is still early for hard-to-encode test samples... vorbis is > still under heavy developement. I'll be looking at this in a bit. Monkey's Audio doesn't work for me as I have no Win/Dos boxen. (Feel free to mail me the WAV directly :-) I grabbed the Vorbis sample up there and I do hear minor distortion centered around the horn itself; I'm guessing this is another facet of '3dB resolution is insufficient for very pure, isolated tonal sources and DC offsets'. I'd like to have the .wav so I can tell for sure, as this is the next thing I'll be tackling in the encoder.
