X100P in the UK - seems to short the dialtone
Hi
A quicky - has anyone had success with an X100P in the UK ?
I'm seeing some oddness - when I plug the wall socket into the card, I lose
dialtone. If I unplug it, it comes back. Does this sound familiar to anyone
?
Cheers

Use of 'by' function with FUN=mean
Hi everybody
I'm having some unexpected errors from the 'by' function when using it to
apply the mean function (by a factor) to a dataframe of numerical
variables. The following piece of toy code demonstrates:
myDataF<-warpbreaks
myDataF$X<-runif(54) # creating an additional numerical variable in
warpbreaks for purposes of this demo

Chi Square with two tab-delimited text files
Hi,
I want to do a chi square test and I have two tab delimited text files with
Expected and Observed values to compare. Each file contains only the values
and are 48 rows by 116 columns. I have managed to do something with them,
but I don't think it is right as I got a p value of 1. In this case I used
the read.table() function to read the values from the files. But I don't
know if

winbind and existing UIDs
Hi,
I'm implementing a Samba service on Solaris (the native CIFS service
being unreliable in our environment); all is working well but I have a
couple of questions regarding winbind which I can't find answers to in
the documentation. I'm using 3.0.37 at the moment, but it wouldn't be a
big deal to use a more recent version if necessary.
The system will join an existing

Using method = "aic" with pspline & survreg (survival library)
Hi everybody. I'm trying to fit a weibull survival model with a spline
basis for the predictor, using the survival library. I've noticed that it
doesn't seem to be possible to use the aic method to choose the degrees of
freedom for the spline basis in a parametric regression (although it's
fine with the cox model, or if the degrees of freedom are specified directly
by the user),

bizarre seq() behavior?
Is there any rational explanation for the bizarre seq() behavior below?
> seq(2,8.1, lenght.out=3)
[1] 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
> help(seq)
> seq(2,8,length.out=3)
[1] 2 5 8
> seq(2,8.1,length.out=3)

Except maybe that it is early in the morning :)

Optimizing Linux with Samba
Hello,
We are reading a lot in the press about which is better, NT or Linux, and I
am not going to start a thread about that! However, one of the issues that
does seem to be repeated, is that both operating systems and software need
to be 'tuned' to get the best possible results. Furthermore, you need to be
an expert, with considerable experience to know what to do. I am running a

Datakam Player (Registrator Viewer)
A few months ago, I tried to get Datakam Player (Registrator Viewer) to
work on my Linux system using wine, without success.
I have since installed a newer wine, and it now starts and can open
the files created by my dashcam, but it does not play them - the video
area remains black, there is no sound and the speed and location
displays do not change.
Short of trying an even newer wine, which

smooth contour lines
Is there an easy way to control smoothness of the contour lines?
In the plot I am working on due to the undersampling the contour
lines I am getting are jugged, but it is clear "by eye" these should
be basically straight lines.
In maps package I found smooth.map function, but maybe there is a more
generic way
of accomplishing the same thing.
Ideally there would be an option to control

Automatic Installation of Printer Drivers from Printer Share
Using Samba 2.0.6
Hi All,
I have this working fine for Windows 95. I can double click on a printer share
and when prompted install the printer driver from the hidden share \\%h\printer$.
It says all over the notes that this will only work under Windows 95, and will
not work for Windows NT. However looking in the archives of this group, I can
see that some people report Windows NT working if they

Leisure Suit Larry's Greatest Hits and Misses
I am now at the point where I have one more thing to install before I
can scrap my Windows box - and it's Leisure Suit Larry's Greatest Hits
and Misses.
I have installed the DOS-based parts of it in dosbox, and also used
sarien and freesci to handle some of it, but there is a significant part
of this collection that needs Windows.
Trying an installation with the default Windows version
