Job Title: Sr Research Associate I Location: Brandeis University, Waltham, MA Full/Part Time: Full-Time Regular/Temporary: Regular The mission of the Institute for Child, Youth and Family Policy (ICYFP) is to conduct and disseminate policy-relevant research on health and development of children and their families. We seek a socially minded, highly motivated data expert with full-time work experience in preparing, analyzing and visualizing scientific data to join our data and analysis team. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of scholars to develop new technologies for monitoring childhood opportunities across U.S. neighborhoods and conduct research on the impact of neighborhood conditions on childhood health and development. The initial appointment will be as Research Associate or Senior Research Associate, depending on qualifications and experience. Examples of Key Responsibilities Build a detailed understanding of relevant datasets and develop new technologies to monitor change in childhood opportunities across US neighborhoods. Contribute analyses to existing or initiate new research project on causes and consequences of inequities in childhood opportunities. Communicate results through manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, online reports, blog posts and web-based data visualizations. Contribute to maintaining project database and website. Required Qualifications Quantitative (math, statistics, computer science, engineering, etc.) background or social science background with quantitative orientation (sociology, economics, public health, etc.). PhD or MA/MS with 1+ years of relevant full-time work experience. Exceptionally qualified candidates with a Bachelor?s degree and at least 3+ years of full-time work experience in a data management and analysis role that closely fits the position requirements. Expert knowledge in two of the following: Stata, R, Python. Proficiency in several of the following: regression models for binary, survival, longitudinal and multilevel data, quasi-experimental research designs and estimators (differences-in-differences, instrumental variables, etc.), data mining or machine learning algorithms. Demonstrated ability to complete data-intensive analysis projects involving complex data preparation, analysis and visualization tasks with limited supervision in a timely manner. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Desired Skills/Experience Experience with some of the following databases: tabular or individual Census Bureau data, e.g. American Community Survey; Current Population Survey; complex administrative datasets or longitudinal/panel datasets. Proficiency in research on racial/ethnic inequities in child health and development and related policy issues. Creative use of static and interactive data visualization with, e.g., ggplot2 or d3. Proficiency in any of the following: GIS concepts and software, SQL, PHP, JavaScript, Vega, Julia, Drupal or other common CMS.
