new to puppet - can puppet push its content to remote servers?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi,
I was made aware of puppet a few weeks ago and I really like the way
things are working.
What I liked at cfengine was the capability to push content from the
central server to any node. There was no need to open a port from DMZ or
any other remote system to the central server.
Is there a similar way within puppet?
How is this solved by other

Doing something ''on demand''
What techniques are people using to do particular tasks once in a great
while?
For example, usually you don''t want to automatically upgrade the kernel
until it''s fully tested but, of course one day you will.
How do you work through Puppet to perform this activity on an on-demand
basis instead of a periodic job.
Are you using state files like "if file X exists do Y"

Forcing puppetd ask puppemasterd for new changes
Guys, I seriously could not find this topic in the documentation.
What do you do when you need to force puppetd hosts get the new
settings from puppetmasterd?
What I found was only sending USR1 signal to the client process in
order to make it refresh its configuration from the master.
But I find it a bit inconvenient for a large amount of hosts.
There is also puppetrun which, if I understand

puppetd can set more than one server address
hi,all
I want set up a puppet HA structure. but if the puppetd can
set more than one server address ,the work will be simple :D
if one puppetmaster have error, the client can auto try the
next. I think I can use the heartbeat or dns to do this same
thing, but not so good. so I want know the puppetd can direct set in
the configure file ? if not, will be add this option?

Push changes to clients
I was wondering how to configure the puppet clients to only listen,
not to periodically pull configs down from the puppetmaster.
I''d rather push the configs out from the puppetmaster with
puppetrun...
At a guess I need to set runinterval to 0 in /etc/puppet/puppet.conf?

Report usage...
Hi,
I''ve setup my systems to do reporting as explained in https://
reductivelabs.com/cgi-bin/puppet.cgi/wiki/ReportsAndReporting, with
tagmail defined as one of the report types - but I do not recieve any
mail at all.
I''ve configured a tagmail.conf file like this:
all: root@localhost
But the documentation mentions three options, namely sendmail,

What to call a class: Manifest? Configuration? ResourceContainer?
Hi all,
I''ve got a new class in the current code, which I''ve been calling
Configuration but Matt reasonably thinks is horrible.
He is recommending the name Manifest, and I figured I''d see what
others thought.
The point of the class is to function as a resource container -- it
keeps a reference to all of the resources we''re managing, and knows

Example of a working runinterval + splay configuration?
I have a substantial number of Windows hosts running puppet 3.1.1 with the
following in their puppet.conf:
runinterval = 1800
> splay = true
> splaylimit = 900
However in checking puppet logs, I''m finding that these hosts are dialing
in at 30 minute intervals +/- 5-10 seconds. Can someone provide me an
example puppet.conf that is properly implementing the splay feature on a

Package management
Anyone care to share how they handle yum updates?
We have a script that runs yum update nightly and then emails us the
results when there are packages to be updated. Ideally I''d like a way to
keep a class in site.pp that can be uncommented to run yum update -y
after the update list is reviewed by a human.

managing config changes
Hi,
I am looking for a way, i.e. best practice for managing config changes
safely and efficiently.
Something like clever module organization could certainly help, but I
am looking for something else as well:
Is it possible to set up puppetd in a way, that it just listens and
reports, but does not apply config changes automatically, and in the
same time has the ability to trigger it somehow?

beginner question
I went through all the ''getting started'' stuff, and have a
puppetmaster and several test clients configured. I''m not clear as to
how the puppetmaster manages the puppet configurations on the
clients ... while it would obviously be possible to add puppet.conf
as a distributed file, I''m guessing there''s probably a better way to
manage this sort

We don''t have nearly as many and yet, we see occasional errors ("End of
file reached") which seems to indicate the network cutting out. I can''t
imagine what would

running and configuring puppetd as a daemon at a set time
Hello All
I gather that the number of times the daemon checks in is controlled
via runinterval (default 1800 seconds)
Further, splay (and splaylimit) sets if a pseudo random time is used
before checking in.
BUT does splay have any meaning if i can not set when the daemon
should attempt to check in? Or can i set the check-in time (i may have
just missed the option)?
cheers
