compression, built-in or ssh ?
What is the general recommendation for compression when using ssh?
Is it a wasteful performance hit to have both ssh and rsync do compression
(when using rsync over ssh)?
If so, is there a clear prefference which is more efficient, rsync or ssh?

Cannot compile - missing <make>
This is the very first time I ever tried to compile anything since
college.
I'm using SCO 5.0.5.
I installed GNU gcc and the Linker package(s) from my SCO dist disc.
After running ./configure --with-smbwrapper, I can't find `make` to
continue and compile ...
My book, Using Samba (O'Reilly), says that `make` and then `make install`
should be my next step. It also mentions that

rsync process never finishes
Hi,
I've got a Debian 3.0 machine from which I initiate rsync connections over
ssh to winNT/2k boxen, where sshd is running as a service, to grab files
from the windows machines.
I don't get any error from either side of the connection. The directory I
indicate is transferred as well as every sub directory, just not any of the
files in the sub directories. The process seems to be running

Could be, thoght the NAS box has the sending system as it's NTP server so
their times should be in sync.
EP> Check out the `--modify-window` option.
Doesn't seem to stop all the folders being listed even though nothing is
transferred.

Further experimentation shows this to be the case IF the destination is
another local drive.
Unfortunately the required destination is a CIFS share, which might change
things.

parsing numeric values
Dear list,
I'm seeking advice to extract some numeric values from a log file
created by an external program. Consider the following example,

Newbie looking to move from Netware to Linux/Samba
I'm looking to move my companies server from an old Netware 5.0 file
server to a Linux/Samba server on new hardware.
Since my companies' systems are not mission critical (I can afford to be
down for a few hours at a time after a switch-over) I feel I have the
tolerance for some problems in getting it installed.
Is this something I should be able to handle on my own (I installed the

Autocad file corruption...
I am having problems with autocad file corruption. My users are
draftsman and access project files via samba over the network. This
problem occurs after a file has been worked on and someone attempts open
a file that they were working on. There is no indication of a problem
while the file is open and being worked on. But when they try to
re-open it, autocad thinks the file is corrupt and it

Samba just Slow with AutoCad?
Brian
I might suggest a couple of setting changes on your XP machines:
1) Open services and stop/disable Web Client
2) Open windows explorer, go to tools>folder options, click the View tab,
and uncheck the "Automatically search for network folders and printers"
(I'm assuming Windows XP Professional on these settings)
Restart and try your printers again.

AutoCAD file names UPPER CASE on samba
Hi folks, we are experiencing a problem when AutoCAD 2000+ drawing files
are saved on a Samba (2.0.8) file share.
Regardless of what the file is 'saved as', the name is always converted to all
capitals.
e.g. Drawing1 becomes DRAWING1
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.
Seems strange that it is only AutoCAD files, but I think it is Samba related,
not AutoCAD,

Samba & AutoCad 2007

I'm managing a Samba server for almost 4 year now and I've got some
glitch with AutoCad & Samba, but I've found many solution to solved
those problems. Last week, I receive many complains about some users
that experience problem using AutoCad. In fact, it's not AutoCad but

Advance, there is a new

Of course they will not rewrite the software in another technology.
However, had they known that running AutoCAD in Wine was important,
they might not have switched to .NET 3.0 before it runs in Wine.
Likewise, if you start letting them know _now_ that there is demand
for AutoCAD on Linux, then in the future they won't switch from .NET
3.0 to .NET 4.0 before it
