OK, here I am :) So, conclusion for now is that DLL file named adlmdll.dll make some troubles with starting AutoCAD application. This DLL seems to be some part of Autodesk License Manager system... If solve problems with Autodesk License managing system perhaps we then can be able to start application...

But I am still thinking is very important to make able run Autodesk License manager and handle licenses under wine. I do not know what security mechanisms has SafeCast as a part of Autodesk License protections, and can wine emulate PC machine enough to properly run SafeCast??! To AutoCAD 2004 used C-Dilla protection system
Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SafeCast#Protection_Level) is some detailed infos about SafeCast protection This protection system write datas to Boot sector of main Hard disk. I do not know how wine can handle this. [Question] I am a little skeptic..

At least the floating license with a license file is partially working (it is tied to the ethernet card which Wine can access). It is recognizing the demo but running 30 days in trial mode because of a problem with the license server, which Wine can handle. For the versions locked to the hardware, I think there may be some difficulties
I'm new to UbunTu, but I go way back to DOS 1.1. So I don't think command line stuff will be any big deal. However, I'm thinking about using Cross Over Pro, instead of Wine. Does anyone have any feedback on Cross Over or comparisons with Wine? Is it better, less buggy? Crossover may be less buggy for applications that are under support, which means that if your application is under support you can expect from one version to the other that you will be able to use it at least as good as if not better. However, crossover's improvements do get back if Wine if they are not too much a hack. However for an application to be supported, it must have enough requests for it (votes) or work well to start with. If your application is not supported and is not working well, you are better off hoping with wine that, due to the more frequent releases your problem will be fixed earlier. This means in the end: if your application does not have enough votes for it, you will have to do some debugging yourself under Wine if you want your application to have a chance to go into crossover's support where it will be looked after that's it does not get broken again. imho comparing Wine and Crossover is comparing apples and pears, they are both fruits but have differents targets.
I just signed in to append my self to the list of people wanting AutoCAD to be usable on wine. Cheers.
It looks more a hack than a patch and thus not very likely. That patch would mean AUTOCAD seems to check if it is not running in a virtual environment.
Sorry, i would like to test it but it seems like wine support for ubuntu 7.10 as been drooped. It seems like M$ Windows, when a new version is released, all support for the olders is ended. I deeply hate ubuntu now, so until i install a true debian distro i wont be able to have a new wine environment. Just to comment, why there isnt any special forum section to append community contributed howtos? It will be usefull as many of the programs runable by wine requires some sort of juggling with wine.

does anyone tried Autocad 2009 with the rc4?? ciao a tutti!! [Wink]
I already posted that but it was deleted. Look at: http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb There is Ubuntu 7.10 version any more. The last version that is have 0.9.56. The last version is ubuntu reps is 0.9.49. If i want an updated version of wine i have to use git (which i did yesterday). If i want the last binary i have to move on Ubuntu 8.04. Move on ubuntu 8 requires 1 Gb of updates, with my internet connections this is not possible, and i have not time to resolve the tons of consecuent problems of a typical ubuntu update. Looking for http://www.google.com.ar/search?q=ubuntu+8.04+troubles There is an unended list of problems to resolve, so if i have to reinstall i will go back to gentoo, i have no experienced any problems on it like the ones i have with ubuntu. My old and wrong reason to move to ubuntu was looking for a complete and uptodate binary system with no problems, basing this asumption on the popularity of ubuntu, but this is soooo wrong.
F.ck M$ .NET and AutoDesk :) What functionalities can ACAD 2009 have that 2008 doesnt and requires .NET 3.0. Windows XP support will be discontinued in short, so if .NET in some future version doesnt support XP any more, wine will be ensure to not be able to run AutoCAD 2010 (too future), as there are no intentions yet to implement the Vista api. Am i wrong?
ruelle wrote:> thanks max!!!! [Wink] [Wink]Dear Ruelle, Once you have installed autocad, could you send a snippet of the log where you had your error? I try to replicate on my own software but none of the proposed solution had cleared the problem with the assembly and since your error messages were 1:1 the same as for me I would be interested to know if it works and if so to try to think out why. Neither Shlwapi.dll nor gdiplus have cleared the problem with the license server.

Linux will NEVER have a native autocad version, at least as long as 90% of users use Windows. Autodesk made 3 important choices that made impossible to port his products to Linux with a manageable (I.E. rentable...) effort : 1) Hard usage of MFC 2) (totally unneeded) usage of .NET 3) (absolutely unneeded) usage of DIRECTX Porting Autocad natively to Linux would mean drop about 10 years of development and restart with a portable toolkit, which could be QT, GTK or whathever. Do you really think they'd ever think to do such a job for less than 10% potential users ? The ONLY viable way for us to have autocad is through wine. Better would be to have a (big) team of developers and make an opensource alternative... but all what have been tryed in past years aborted miserabily. Max
Dotan Cohen wrote:> > ....... > If we don't speak up, then the next version of AutoCAD just might not > work with wine, and then what will you do? Buy Windows? > > Dotan Cohen >Nope. I'll stay with a version that DOES work in wine waiting for a native opensource alternative. IMHO, we've got twice the probability to have an opensource autrocad-like app in linux than a port of autocad.... Knowing a bit of MFC/DOTNET/DIRECTX, I'm sure that it'll be by easier by far to write a cad from scratch than port autocad on linux. And, if we REALLY want a good alternative, instead of whining in front of autodesk's door we should try to start a true (and maybe sponsored) autocad-like opensource project. IMHO, in 10 years we could have an even better alternative than autocad. BTW, I'm using cad since the first beginning (about 20 years ago), and I'm quite happy with autocad 2005; I leave fancy eyecandies of post-2005 to people that like them. Speaking about "newer" and "better" (???) apps, I'd like to know somebody that really uses some "new and better" stuffs in office 2003+ that office 97 doesn't have.... Me not, for sure. Even whorse, I was fighting each day with that damn'd autocorrect-autobullet-autoidiot stuff embedded in office 2003, which IMHO is made by english language ill-minded programmers that think that me must all write letters in english and because of that we need an app that uppercases each "i" letter for us.... Do we really need that ??? Before migrating to openoffice, I resorted to open notepad, write my texts on it and cut-and-paste to M$ Weird, to avoid autodummy stuffs. And it was NOT enough to disable the autostuffs, they got re-enabled after some time autoidiotically... do you still think that's a "better" app ? me not. Same thing of autocad 2008/9. What do you USE that's not in 2005 ? The supercustomizable interface ? The autohighlight of entities when cursor passes over them ? Auto linked cross sections of 3d objects that are so slow to be unusable ? New .net programming ? DirectX support ? (oh, wow, we've got dx support, how wonderful, it doesn't matter if it's slower than opengl, IT'S DIRECTX !!!!) Or maybe you MUST use it because other people do use it and send to you dwg that you can't open in 2005 because they're incompatible ? I guess the latter is the answer..... Max

It's true that on last year I started receiving dwgs that my good old 2005 can't open, but they don't use ANY of the new superfancy features of 2006+. They're just incompatible because use a different file format. So, I went here ; http://www.dwggateway.com/ And.... problem solved. My old-good-fast 2005 now can open 2008 files, and I'm sure that it'll open version 2256 files too in the future.> > Other than the UI, lots of things change from > version to version and new features are always added. Even if you > don't want to use it, you should promote the development of > professional software for Linux. >The only, really only feature I miss in 2005 that 2006 has is quoting of arc lengths. BTW, I hate the "autohighlight-of-objects-when-mouse-passes-over-them", just eyecandy that's completely useless and slows down work. So, I wrote my small autolisp app that does quote arc lenghts. About promoting development of software on Linux, I agree. But that one won't come from autodesk side. What we really need by now is the opening of dwg format. Opening means making it truly opened, not as dwgdirect did, that's jjust having a second monopole targeted at non-windows platform. We need this because autocad dwg IS the standard, and you can't work without it, by now.> > > > IMHO, we've got twice the probability to have an opensource > > autrocad-like app in linux than a port of autocad.... What I don't understant is the focus on porting crapp MS apps like office, IExplorer, Outlook (the infamous "I want virus! I need it!" app...). In Linux we miss : 1) Good dwg-compatible cad (with full 3d support) 2) Good HTML WISYWIG editor (something like dreamweaver, I mean) 3) Some vertical apps, but on those I think is a good idea to ask sw-houses to port to linux, as they don't have a so bread user pool, so it may be rentable for them to port. 4) Games. Yes, Linux widespreading must pass thru it. Many young people stay on windows because theyr preferred games don't run on linux. We DON'T (imho....) need a crap M$ Office, Outlook, or so.> > > > And, if we REALLY want a good alternative, instead of whining > > in front of autodesk's door we should try to start a true (and maybe > > sponsored) autocad-like opensource project. > > IMHO, in 10 years we could have an even better alternative than autocad. > > > > I'm all for it. I know, it's quite dummy to have 1 GB ram + some 4-5 GB of HDD blocke just to run autocad, but....> > > > BTW, I'm using cad since the first beginning (about 20 years ago), > > and I'm quite happy with autocad 2005; I leave fancy eyecandies of > > post-2005 to people that like them. > > > > Actually, I like them. Well, the best you could do by now is to sponsor some developer to solve wine's problems for solidworks... or at least start analyzing it. If you really need it, that's the good way. But it'll be far more expensive than an xp license, maybe with a vmware one. I think wine developers are doing a really great job... 1 year ago I was thinking that autocad 2005+ would never run on wine because of dotnet... and now it does. So I think we're not far from 100% of apps running on wine. Of course, we still need some speed improvements, but it can be done... now I'm seeing the end of the tunnel :) Did you try to debug solidworks on wine ? Maybe that's less difficult than you can think... That happened to autocad, that was laying aroung for years before a stupid installation problem solved brought it back to live. Me too I do use autocad2005 for my job, not just to see drawings, but I don't miss the features on 2006+ versions... nobody I know uses them :-) Max

Of course it will be hard, and will not have from start all the features of the newest autocad, but if it never starts, then will never have enought developers. And the major problem is being able to import and export to dwg. Also of course and as in OOo it should have its own open format. But i see that it wont start any time soon.

However, it is unrelated to wine, so please take off topic discussions elsewhere.
now is it possible to run autocad 2005 in wine with patch, am I right?:D :D when it will be possible to run it on a normal installation of wine?? :? thank you, ciao!!
ruelle: Maybe never. It is a hack. Can somebody with a sane English write an online petition for autocad in: http://www.petitiononline.com/create_petition.html Or maybe create a webpage like with nvidia opendriver request: http://www.opentheblob.com/nvidia/ That would be a start for someday having a real AutoCAD version in linux. Some topics that the letter should cover are: - Financially supporting the wine project for it supporting perfectly AutoCAD, or submit patches, and use winelib to distribute it, as Google does. - Use Mono instead of .NET - Use OpenGL instead of DX.
Hi miciomax! I want to test the patch for Autocad if it solves my problem too because the symptoms are the same but the patch is not automatically installing on the last GIT stand when using patch -p1 < patch_name.diff and one has to enter the lines manually. Is it working on your side when you apply it that way?
ruelle wrote:> Near The End?? > > http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13599#c63Hope so :-) OpenGL patch should be accepted by tomorrow, and I posted registry patch that solves 13838 bug.... which should the last one. Once applied, autocad will be installable on wine without patches, just winetricks for dotnet 2.0 and msxml3, and shfolder.dll as native for the registration dialog. Ready to switch to gold status :D Max
yahoo!!:D :D :D :D :D :D sei un grande max!!

I didn't try dwggateway on linux. I'll do it on next days, maybe. But, for now, you can just use 2008... it's crashing here and there, but to open/convert/save a drawing it can be used. Or, there are some free alternatives.... maybe you can look at http://www.opendwg.com/files/guestdownloads/EveryDWG.zip, it's still a windows app, but I guess it'll work on wine. Max
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14422 so no good news about autocad?? :?
