using a windows installation
First I would like to say how proud of and thankful to all the people
who help out with wine. Its a great project and a lifesaver for
everyone trying to get away from being tied to windows. With that being

Do I need to defile my machine, or is there a simple work-around
I am trying to install Microchip's MPLab package (a set of tools for
working with PIC microcontrollers) with the latest Wine from CVS (at
least, latest as of yesterday morning).
I've been running Wine for a while, so I already have an existing Wine
registry. I don't have a Windows install on the machine.
The installer (InstallShield) unpacks, runs, and then pops up a dialog

Is there a difference ...?
Doh123, how is running a program off an NTFS partition asking for trouble? Ntfsprogs seems to handle it just fine. I know that NTFS doesn't let you mark a file as executable, and that the filesystem is susceptible to fragmentation, but you should just be able to tell it to run rather than display and be good. It shouldn't cause destruction. I think there might even be an NTFS defrag tool

Integrating a dual boot system
After a succession of failed attempts spread over a few years, I have finally got a Linux installation that does nearly everything I need it to.
I've also got Wine working on at least a few things.
However there are occasions when I want to dip back into Windoze, and so I've got a dual boot system, which is OK, but it could be a heck of a lot better.
The relevant points are: WINE runs on

Sims?
Hi!
I am asking it here :)
My sister bought this game: Sims: Animal histories
The installer works partially, when accepting a license, the installer
says: 'Impossible to continue installation because this game derquier
DirectX9.0c or higher. You can download it on M$..."
What can I do?
Can you bypass the check?
Maybe with adding dlls (native)?
I also tried to installa DirectX

dlls - still a newbie
I'm very confused as usual.
I have an NTFS/Linux dual boot. I usually run from kde.
If I understand correctly, wine, when it runs a program will
1. see it ask for a function in a dll
2. check up in the config file for that dll and note if native or built-in or
nothing has been noted.
3. from there, it will either use built-in, or native file in the order
written.
So, if I install and app,

The .dll files
I have heard that there are some .dll files in wine that are faster than the ones in windows, i have a dual booting vista and ubuntu system, and i have a server that i'm looking to turn into a gaming pc, but i'm not going to buy another copy of windows, so i have installed ubuntu onto it, and am going to import the .dll files from windows, each and every one of them, but since there are

New user
Hi all, i'm a new user of wine and i have some doubts.
First i'm using wine with gentoo.
I read in the wine web some info about the config file that wine uses, but
in the gentoo ebuild no sample file is installed, or i haven't found it.
Even more it seems that the winecfg application is used to configure wine,
but it seems to not be finished and uses the registry files in ~/.wine to

OneNote on a DualBoot system
I have a Toshiba laptop that came with Windows XP and OneNote
installed. I then installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake and am dual-booting
the system. I want to run OneNote on Ubuntu with WINE. Obviously I
could set up WINE to use the dual-booting native DLLs (but I don't know
how to do that), and I can't install OneNote directly on Ubuntu with
WINE because while I have a legal copy of the full

how to overwrite DLLs?
Moin,
I can define the load order for specific applications using winecfg. But what
is the propper way to copy these DLLs from a 'real' windows box? Just
owerwrite the wine-ddl in windows/system32/ ? But isn't this the 'build in'
DLL, that should be used for applications with load order 'Build in'?
Sorry I am confused.

Planning first Linux/Wine install
I'm planning my first Linux/Wine install. Is there any advantage to
having a Windows (say W2K) partition to install Win apps to, when the
plan is to run them under Wine/Linux?
I do have a licensed copy of W2K, so I could do that if it were an
advantage (e.g., is it easier to install difficult or unruly win apps
under windows first?).
Any other suggestions (I'm planning out my partition

Coping WoW tree
I have just been told that I can copy the installed WoW tree from Win XP to
Wine (same machine, dual boot) because WoW doesnt use the registry. Granted,
that would save a lot of time, BUT, is it true?
Thanks,
Jim

installation didn't set up a registry
First of all, I'm using wine source code tar file version 20020804. I
ran wineinstall to compile and install wine on a Linux-only machine
(Mandrake 8.2). It creates the windows directory alright but the system
and system32 directories don't have any dll's or registry information in
them. Doesn't the install process setup a fake registry? Do I have to
copy one from a

How can we improve WNE?
Hello everybody.
I'm a (quite) happy WINE user, but i would like to propose some things to
the WINE developers.
Something important imo, is that it must be easy to use for the user, and
some things could be better, here are some ideas to improve it by using
Winecfg:
1. Add an option to disable/enable/edit debug channels for all programs. As
you may know, a lot of programs runs faster

Squeezing every last drop of performance out of DirectX
Hi Folks,
I have been using Wine for some time now to run Team Fortress 2 (and other HL2 based games) on my Ubuntu system. I was previously running Ubuntu 7.10 with an Athlon64 3800+, a 7600GT (256MB of RAM), and 2GB of DDR2 333MHz. Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 (i386) with an AthlonX2 64 6000+, an 8800GT (1GB of RAM) and 4GB of DDR 800MHz. I was really hoping for a nice performance bump
